ohlins rear shock identification

So I,ve bought a second hand ohlins but how do you identify its a real ohlins?
There is a number on the spring and a rubber bumper stop with ohlins on it but I cant find any other identifiable numbers on it?..... any more info is welcome....

If it's a YAMAHA OHLINS see on top of the shock near the screw hole there should be written somethinglike "YA2201" or different 4 numbers). Does it have separate reservoir?

yeah there are some numbers...ya2161 on one side and 110461 on the other....mean anything ?

hmm best thing mail me some pics of the shock, and please the distance between center of the two holes (use two big screwdrivers to get an exact size) should be something around 38 cm to be correct

Hmm the only ohlins codes adaptable easily are:

YA2201 TTS600
YA3296 TTR600
YA453 XT600E\Z

can't find from wich yamaha it comes from (surely yamaha due to the two starting letters YA) could be YZ or WR model.

If you can mail me a pic and the exact distance between holes centers i can tell you more.

what's the best plug and play rear suspension i can install from a different bike that i will see a difference while riding?

which models and years etc...

Why not buy one that fits, made from Hagon, Wilbors, YSS or simular?

By the time you have sourced a used shock, modified it and the bike to sorta fit, had it serviced ect ect, youre way over the price on a "right" one.

True but used ones are very cheap here in Greece and i'm an mechanical engineer so i might modify it quite cheap... the best thing would be what you say Jens , but it's very expensive!

Well look whos talking..like you never spend time doing things with bike that most likely are wasted? Its part of the fun with old bikes, you make things fit and its cheap and maybe as good as the really expensive new stuff.

I never said anything about wasted time, dont know why you would say that.

I litterally just said it might be cheaper to get a shock made for this bike. Beeing better in the first place, and cheaper in the long run

This advice is based excatly on what I have done, with both my xt600, and my wr250. So dont know what youre on about...

If there was a unicorn shock outthere, that fits with minor mods, was cheaper than anything else, and it worked a charm (or "maybe as good as the really expensive stuff" as you put it), I bet we would all have heard about it. He would still likely need to get it serviced, and have it resprung for his weight. Theres way more to a shock than just the physical dimmentions.


A basic wilbers (or simular) shock which can be serviced and rebuild, sprung to your excact weight starts around 300-350euro as I recall. YSS are even cheaper starting at under 300euro, and even come with ride height adjustment (not just spring preload) They all pop up secondhand from time to time aswell. I know, because I bought one myself. Mine was "the middle" option from Wilbers with rebound adjustement. This is a once in a lifetime investment. And the shock can be parted out if you later on decide to sell your bike, to cut your losses.

Point was, its not just about finding a shock, most offroad-shocks sold are WAY past where they should have been serviced (theyre sold cause the user found something better), and the basic ones arent made to be rebuildable, so you need to take that into account aswell. It also needs to suit the geometry of the bike, you need to find the right spring for it, and have it fit in the pretty special frame/carb/airbox setup.

I've seen people fit old IT shocks to xt550 (common mod), and have them ride way worse because the shock was just as worn as the original. So again, actual experience.

I also know what it takes to rebuild my stock Wr250 shock, if it needs more than just oil and fresh nitrogen, you better have your wallet wide open, even when doing ot yourself. Thats even before you consider to revalve it. Instead
I purchased a one-off custom made Hyperpro shock with adjustement for rebound, high and low speed compression and hydraulic preload adjustement ... Again bought secondhand. I can sell it for more than i bought it for, so not expensive in my opinion.

Thats my recommendation, noone is saying this is the right choice for everybody. I just know it worked for me on several bikes, and with everything taking into account, this was really the only option for me. So thats my recommendation to him. Isnt this how it works? To make recommendations based on actual experience.
