Oil leak xt600
Hi, i have got a small leak at the valve cover, i cant find any gasket on the yamaha parts. Is it just a normal sealent gasket you apply? and the big question, is possible to take off the valve cover with engine in the frame? just remove all the bolts on the top or something else i need to do?

The valve covers have seals....remove and replace the seal with a new one from your friendly yamaha dealer...

I didnt explain correct, iam talking about the top of the engine, not just the small covers for the valves.

Hi !

There is no gasket on the rocker cover, The yamaha recommended sealant is yamaha bond no 1215. I used loctite 5920 silicone gasket though. Use it sparingly and yes you can get the cover off with the engine in the frame. Lots of different sized bolts. I drew the shape of the cover on a piece of card and poked the bolts through the card as they came off to help me remember where they all went on reassembly. Watch out for the "hidden" bolt at the top of the rocker cover where the engine is bolted to the frame using triangular brackets. Good luck!

THanks, so its just to lift up after removing the bolts, the tensioner case can still be in place?

Yes thats correct, Also I could undo this "hidden" bolt , but because of the

length of the bolt and the close proximity of the frame I couldnt remove it

fully until the cover was away from the bike. This is not a big problem, but I

had to place the bolt in position in the cover before replacing it on to the

engine. if that makes sense? Maybe once you`ve taken the cover off and

cleaned the old sealant off refit it dry(no sealant) and try and get this bolt

in. I forgot to do this with mine and refitted the cover with the sealant on

and had to take it all off again ,clean it up all because couldnt get this

bloody bolt in!! But eventually this method worked for me.

Great, this will be a big help for me, its hell when the sealent is on and you need to take off again..I have a old tube of loctite sealent, i recon there is no expiry date on this one? seems fine to me.

Perhaps worth mentioning also- is this worked on my bike , a 2003 model. Your model may be different? Service and parts manuals are available (on this site) for a lot of the xt variants- which will help for this and any future problems you may have.

Yes have 93mod. Have taken all bolts out, but it seem to be stuck still, have tried tapping around but still no movement..

Have you removed the difficult to see one I referred to in my earlier posts? It sits between the two lugs where the two triangular shaped frame to engine brackets bolt on.

Yes i got the cover up but It seem to me like its impossible to get the cover taken away from engine without lower the engine, its to tight beetween the frame, time chain is holding cover from getting out. Maybe they made some changes here in your next frame?

Maybe it was possible if i had removed carb..I did the seal with the cover liftet up, have to check tomorrow if this was any good idea or wasted time.. Thanks for the help.
