problems in Suriname
Got stuck in the jungle bad!!!!!!! Travelling through Guyana, on a very bad road. Got stuck in some very deep waterholes. And electric starter stopped working as did most other electric thinks. Managed to drive to Paramaribo were the bike is in a garage of a friend. cleaned the whole bike, but the electric strarter still doesn't work, the lights are very poor. The bike still works on the kickstarter I installed before I left home(netherlands) If I use the electric starter I hear a niose coming from a electrical device. The one directly connected on the plus(red)of the battery. It has the following inscrption on it Hitachi MS5D191 12 Volt. And where it is connected to the battery AX6. I'm will start working on the bike tuesday the 26th of feb and any info is welkom. Don' t think I can get the part here, so should get it in europe or drive in this condition to brazil where I probably can go to a Yamaha dealer.
Any info is welcome
Cheers Mark

this part is the relais which connects the starter directly to the battery when you push the starter knob.
maybe the only problem is that the battery is discharged, so first charge the battery or connect the bike to a 12 V car battery to check everything.
if the relais is faulty you have to change it.
principally you can use any 12 v relais which is able to switch the amps.
the starter motor has 800 W, so you need a relais which can switch 800 W / 12 V = 67 A.
if you can manage to connect the cables it should be possible to use starter relais from other bikes (or even from a car engine), not only yamaha.
to check the starter, connect directly to the battery (or other 12 V-source, e.g. car battery). it should turn then.
good luck!

Hai Mark,
I agree with Klaus, probably the contacts inside the relais are coroded by the water.
After all this you might also want to check the generator since you mentioned the poor light. It can also be damaged by the water.
Good luck

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
