sputtering XT600E
Hi
I removed the plastic on top of the air box (the piece under the seat) from my 95 xt600E.....This (i hear) improves torque....and even if that's not the case, it sounds awesome!!!!!....but the bike feels like it's sputtering and the accelaration isn't smooth ..............so,in effect i added airflow to the carburator, and assume that the mix is now much leaner in the carb.....now one of two things
1) I adjust the pilot screw to richen the mix
2) add a sponge air filter over the excisting airfilter to reduce airflow
which will be the best.....
and if you pick pilot screw, i need some help, i finally located it, but what tool will i use.....basically how do i go about adjusting the thing!!!!

i would suggest yu put the plastic back on the air box if it isnt making any difference, your running lean and disrupting the whole carburation set up. remember two carbs and its the transition onto the diaphram carb thats causing the splutter. if it aint broke leave it be.

I have a 86 xt 600 I have replaced the pilot jet and now it start well but as soon as I open the throtle wide open it sputters and wil not go faster than 100 kmh , it had this problem before I replaced the pilot jet , I thought it was dirt inside but have had it apart and found nothing , any ideas ???
everything else is stock

Timing of secondary
Hi Wab!
Did you check the timing of the secondary carb. It should open when the primary is 5 mm open, according to this German data: http://www.xt600.de/xt_werkstatt/%2B...aten_xt600.htm (Synchronisation (Öffnungspunkt Verg. 2))
The way to do it is to place a drill-end of the right size under the primarys piston, and adjust till the 2nd start opening. (I'm sure you knew)
I'm having the same problem for my -88 3AJ. At the moment my carbs are in parts. I found some dirt in the strainer just above the float-needle valve. (not sure the -86 XT have this) I'm hoping that the timing of the 2nd. will solve my (and yours) problems. I will set my 2nd carb at 7 mm according to the same data for 3AJ's.
