Tidying the back end up of XT600E
Hello,
I'm slowly prepping my XT for a trip to Morocco and I'm very nearly there but I'm concerned about my rear end (oo err missus).
That big bit of plastic that hold the number plate - is there anything else out there that will do the job but not hang down so far or do I just take a hacksaw to it?

I would leave it alone. Its not pretty, but on such a trip, you choose function over form. Its doing a great job of keeping mud of youre luggage and youre back.
If you want, sure, just saw some of it off.
I use mine for a lot of different stuff, and have cleaned up the back end, and live with mud on my arse. It have however, failed me once, so I lost the entire numberplate, and rear light while offroading. Not much fun, so had to redo it. Wouldnt be fun at all on a rtw trip. =)
Heres a pic, al the crap from the orig. rear end is off, and new bracket/mounting plate made from diamond-alu-plate (hope you know what I mean, dont know the english word for it) and fitted smaller flashers.

ihacked mine up to where its flush with the bottom of my number plate and have had no problem yet. but i do like the way jens looks, very minimal.

Jens, that's what I'm worried about, hitting some big bumps off road and ripping the lot off.
I might just hack it down a bit, while a bit basic, it will do the job I suppose. I was hoping for a tail tidy solution but I suppose this way costs nothing...

My home made tail tidy, reflector is now attached to the bottom of the number plate.
I then built a made to measure undertray out of much thinner aluminium sheet which goes between this tail tidy and the bike and protects all the way from the CDI unit in the tail to the rear shock. The underside of the seat and the rear subframe doesn't get plastered in mud anymore, and jet washing the bike is dead easy.
Looking at the bike you don't see anything, and even when you get on the floor and look up it all looks quite neat.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
