TT600 engine information
hi, i'm looking for a bit of information on TT600 engines.
i have a 1983 XT600 34L which i have just got a dating certificate from Yamaha UK for.
it turns out the frame is of an 83 XT 600 but the engine is from a 1987 TT600.
what im wondering is was the engine put into the TT600's of this year the same as the engines in the 83 XT's?
im wanting to know whether the same problems with the early XT engines (weak 5th gear/oil pump) occur with the 87 TT's.
i'm assuming they use the same engine so have the same weaknesses but was just looking for conformation before i embark on a long distance trip.
any information would be greatly appreciated.

ok so do the TT600's use the same engine then? i was planning on splitting the cases and inspecting the transmission before any long distance ride, but untill then i trust it for day to day riding

In the US they added an external oil line in 88 on the XT600. Look for the external oil line from the oil filter area to the center cases . YHUMPTHUMP

ye i have seen pictures of the external oil line but mine doesnt have one :/ and thats a very good point about the electrics i hadnt thought aboout that, the headlight beam is very dull could this explain it ?

hi havent posted for a little while, unfortinatly the worst happened, the transmission went on the TT Engine :/ it was on 69000km though so i was expecting it to happen at some point. luckly i had 2 spare 55W engines, one was a much lower milage (25000km at last MOT) so have dropped that one in and has been running like a dream for the last few weeks, had a few teething problems to start with but have sorted them out now
as soon as i get the money im planning to to do the 3TB swap (again mainly for the leccy start
i have noticed abit of knocking, mainly when shes cold, my first thought was either the cam chain tension or the valve clearances (which i did check before dropping the engine in but best to double check ) ive also "done the whole put her in first and let the clutch out with brake on" test and the knocking does seem to increase :/ so not looking good but will see if it improves after double checking the cam chain and the valve clearences.

had a good look through xpag6259's build thread and was wondering is the 3TB a direct fit then ?
i found this chart of which engine can be fitted to which frames and it doesnt mention that the 3TB will go into the 34L/55W frame, but i have read that some engines are wider so the swing arm has to be swapped because of different sprocket spacing :/ i am looking at doing an engine swap fairly soon so any info would be great.

The 3tb has the front c'sprocket sticking out about 8mm farther than the older motors. They fit right in the old frames but the chain will rub the frame if the motor isn't moved over a little bit. Also the old swingarm can be used but the sprocket should be spaced over toward the swingarm to help chain lineup even better.
Then you'll need to deal with the electronics for the starter, quite a bit of work but boy is it nice to be able to just hit the starter to fire it up without going through the kicker routine, especially when bundled up for the cold.

I may well be doing this very conversion myself soon, still unsure just yet?
Picked up a very tidy 2001 XT600E two weeks ago for the bargain price of $400
Its only done 35,000 k`s & i was thinking of robbing the engine & electrics/wiring loom & TCI, front & rear end & putting in to one of my 34L`s, and do a kicker conversion, so 3TB front forks/brakes, 3TB steel swingarm & rear disc brake.
The engine casing has some hairline cracks (semi seized) and hence the cheap price, the swingarm bolt has seized itself to the bearings & the only option it to chop the bolt in four places to remove the engine, so,,,upsee daisy.
Warning to all you "E" owners out there, Yamaha did away with the swingarm grease nipples on this model & this is what happens (stuck solid) you can fit grease nipples to prevent this or just remove that bolt every couple of years & grease it manually.
The previous owner mushroomed the bolt trying to belt it out, he welded a massive bolt on the other side & tried an air powered impact gun & it didn’t budge one millimetre.
This is not uncommon, and the only way to resolve the stuck bolt is to chop it in four places & then get the shagged parts pressed out, new bearings & another bolt.

Yep and all the penetrating oil in the world won't loosen them. The rust swells inside the collars and they become one . I sandblast mine and paint with a zinc enriched coating then nickel anti-seize covering the whole thing. All the Japanese brands dropped grease zerks for some dumb reason, all with the same end result.
I could use that frame Mezo ! Cut it in half throw in a box , with title. May be a bitch for me to register though. Yes a frame does cost that much up here.

Me & two other blokes wheeled it up the stairs, two pushing & one pulling/steering, only just got working on it this week as i put my back out flipping it upside down.
Its back upright now sitting on my milk crate with everything else removed, just the single head bolt to remove & i can lift the frame off.
And im single.
