URGENT - Bad Noise - XTZ660 (~YF3)
Hiya All
I really hope you can help me out here, I went looking at a bike yesterday and it is mint... except the engine.... I remember my old 1997 XTZ660 and it didnt sound like this...
The bike is a 1997 XTZ660
The problem; when on tick over, about 1600 RPM and whener the revs are below about 4500 RPM; there is a really bad clanking sound in the engine, I can pin-point it to the lower part of the engine case but could not tell which side. Certainly more towards the front....
What can it be...
I am considering taking the bike to Yamaha to get a quote for the job being done properly, the seller is ok with this... but I really need to have an idea before I go there...
I do have a video clip with sound if I can figure out how to post it..
Suggestions please..
Thank you.
Tony.

Suggest giving it a wide berth - why buy a dodgy 10 year old bike??

Doesn't sound good, but if its the right price may be overcome.
There is a thread somewhere on here regarding a similar noise at low revs caused by the main crank nut working loose, if you do a search the symptons should be desribed, and its an easy fix

If you can buy at a price that allows a full engine strip-down and rebuild, and you are willing to do the work, then go for it. Assume the worst, buy accordingly, and be pleasantly surprised if it's only a loose bolt.
I think a trip to a Yamaha dealer for a professional opinion would be a good idea, though. It gives you some idea of how much you are in for, and the estimate would be a great bargaining chip. Noises are notoriously hard to diagnose over the web.

Thanks folks..
I am looking at a couple of others of similar age to compare against, as you say.. I can do all the work myself as long as I can get a good torque wrench and a full gasket set... But do I want to... dont know yet...
Yamaha might be a better idea... short term solution with guarantee of workmanship (you would hope)...
Either way, I´ll see after the weekend, thanks again,
Tony.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
