Hey man
This is what worked for me with my 86 XT 600e.
I had over-rich conditions, plug told me that. i peeled the carb, float was correct, jets in mint shape all nicen clean. I started looking at the airbox design and herein lies the problem... its junk. The design is very restrictive. I removed the airbox used a keyhole saw bit and drilled 2- 3/4 in holes in the side(the side panel covers them). cleaned and primed the air filter. Then I removed the spark arrester fron the tail pipe, cleaned it and trimmed the four fins down with a small grinder so it still has support. Then cut the outside screen off and removed the crimped end so it was almost freeflow. Made it sound throatier and deeper but man did it ever increase the mid range torgue. Those two mods breathed new life into the bike but please remember what worked for me may not necessarily work for you. Check out my sprocket woes in a earlier post. If you want pics let me know.
