34L Tenere project
Hi hi! This is the start of fixing my '84 Tenere, there's a list of stuff that needs to be done - going to start with the essentials and work on it over the next year til it's looking brand new! I bought the bike in Africa, rode the shit out of it and it just about got me back home to Ireland! Plan on heading away again in start of 2012 so got little over a year to make her sweet again, going to focus on the essentials first as I'll be using the bike daily (once it's running again!) and maybe finish with a paint job before I go!
Will post photos in a few days but here's some info on what's going to be done: - Frame - Seems okay, no cracks anyway. Will need a good clean and paint job (way down the list of things to do!)
- The cylinder didn't look too bad but the bike has been burning a lot of oil, the top of the piston and all around the valves are caked in black soot with one of the valves not sealing properly because of this.
- Intake rubber (connecting carb to head) is cracked. Replace.
- Wiring ruined, going to replace the lot.
- Chain & sprockets well worn. Replace.
- Crappy chinese battery deader than a doornail. Needs replacing with something decent. Suggestions?
- A lot of reflective material inside headlight has peeled. Possible to fix?
- Speedometer + rev counter mashed. Replace (maybe with something a bit bling!)
- Cam chain tensioner: large thread gone. Tapable I hope or replace...
- 5th gear, some minor pitting but working for the mo.
- Oil pump: Got a 3AJ pump, just needs correct gear and fitting!
- Couple of small oil leaks from engine, will look into it but possibly just bad African gasket job.
- Wheels rims have some corrosion on inside from what I remember, dunno how bad it is now.
- Brakes okay, may replace rear drum with discs if it's possible/worthwhile.
- Headlight cowl and plastic side cover have some bits broken off - plan to use fibreglass or some sort of filler. Any other ideas welcome.
- Front mudguard bit broken. Replace (not that essential tho)
- Taillight lens broken. Replace.
- Rear shock bit soft - will do for day-to-day use but will replace before big trip/heavy luggage.
- Clutch hard to change when hot, will look into it...
- Mirrors: thread gone on handlebar side. Will be tapping if possible otherwise replace.
Is it possible to put an electric start on this bike? Would it be a major headache?
What other mods would people suggest?
Going to post this to a few forums for the most feedback, I don't have a lot of technical know-how yet but I've read a good few rebuild threads now so I guess just start taking it apart and work it out from there!
