XT600E rear shock failure?

Info:

About to leave for a 40 day 8000 mile trip from Kazakhstan back to the UK, time is tight and ant really afford massive breakdown delays. We will be doing the Pamir Highway and other rough stuff. I'm 80kg, riding buddy about 100kg and we are probably loaded with 15kg of stuff + fuel (max 24 and 22 L respectively).

Question:

Has anyone ever failed a rear shock and should we take the useable used spare we have (4-5kg)? Both bikes are running standard shocks of unknown quality, they look and feel ok and the plunger isn't rusted at all. If the damping were to fail, has anyone experience with the rubber and duct tape trick?

Thanks.

I wouldn't worry, they're as tough as the rest of the bike.

Thanks chaps. I've shouted "I told you so" at my buddy and refused to carry it. It's now consigned to the garage, where it shall remain.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
