Xt600e Won't Run
Folks,
I just got the carb back from an ultrasonic clean and complete overhaul. Fitted it, bike started easily enough and then I took it a test ride along the wee back road and it cut. Took ages to get it going again, rode it back home (about 3 miles) and it cut out again as I came in the driveway. It has clean fuel, tank filter checked, fuel tap stripped and cleaned. Any ideas?

Are you sure its definitly fuel related? Did it tick over and pull as it should when you rode the 3 miles home? If you havent already maybe worth checking for a spark at the plug as it may be an intermitant leccy fault.

If the carb has just been done - odds on it is the carb (but could be anything else too).
It could be a bit of gunk left in the carb thats blocking a passage or jet?
Filler cap breather? If its when its HOT, could be coil breaking down even? Leccy's (if dodgy) will often get worse the hotter they get!

It did start OK from cold and when i first rode it, there was popping from the exhaust, like a misfire. And on the way home home it was pulling, then a short quick lose of power then it ran again. It did seemed to be worse when it was hot. So coil pack?

The way you discribe loss of power does point to a momentary lack of fuel which would almost certainly be carburation. So as already said a pull down and blow through should sort it (also sounds as though it may be running a bit to lean imo) If it were an electrical fault coil etc, you would probably experience a complete loss of engine power, although it may restart after a short cool down period.

If it starts misfiring once hot, maybe coils or some related electikz? Coils, etc, can start mis-behaving when warm as heat means more resistance. But, could just as easily be fuel related

I've stripped the carb again although I paid good money for this to be done. I didn't find anything untoward. I have ordered a new coil an spark plug socket. Should arrive in the next few days. Will keep you posted. Cheers.

New coil and spark plug socket fitted, checked for a spark and everything was ok. Put the fuel tank on and the damn thing won't fire up. Anyone want to buy an XT? Unfinished project.

Not me too many projects going on at the mo. But if you have fuel, spark, air and compression it should run, another check would be just to make sure no wires have been trapped around the tank headstock area etc, good luck if all else fails finish off the Christmas plonk haha.

Hi
I've always said that the root of all evil on xt's, is the side stand switch. By pass it and see what happens. It won't take long, and it's worth a go. Also check the wiring to the keyed ingition switch.

Doesn't have one, or *didn't ever* have one?
My XT had the sidestand switch removed long before I got it, but I was having persistent problems with misfiring. Turns out there was a break in the wire from the ignition box to where the sidestand switch ought to be. The PO had earthed it, but the earth was broken. Bypassed the wire, and all fine.
If the bike *never* had a sidestand switch, that's different.
