XT600Z - engine cuts out when coming to a stop
Hi guys,

i've got an XT600Z 34L with a 4PT engine and a 3PT wiring loom. Had the following issue below this weekend.

Still occurs with the clutch switch shorted. The sidestand switch isn't connected. And it happens only in gear and when the clutch is pulled, so I don't think it's carb related.

Any ideas?

- Bike cuts out/dies when slowing to a stop, in gear and when you pull in the clutch.
- Then have to put bike in neutral to restart. Then pulls off OK.
- Does it 90-95% of the time
- Doesn’t do it in neutral
- Doesn’t do it if in gear & don’t pull in the clutch
- Can’t start bike when in gear & pull in the clutch
- Does it in all gears, not just 1st
- Shifts OK, up & down and at speed - bike otherwise OK to ride, unless slowing to a stop
- Small amount of misfiring (bit more than usual) but nothing major
- Continuity OK on clutch switch female connector, but not on male connector (hooked up to loom)

study your CDI diagram and run a new wire sidestepping the clutch /side stand / kill switch interlocks. see if it solves the issue, if not, report back for further instructions.

Is your clutch dragging and stalling the engine ?

It would explain why it only happens in gear when coming to a stop.

Put your bike in gear with the engine off.

Pull clutch in and try to roll backwards. You should be able to easily roll the bike..


It could also be the carb. Or a combination of both.

You say you have a misfire. Mis-fires aren't usual. They are a sign that your bike is not running correctly.

Sort out your misfire and you may find it sorts out your stalling issue.

I experienced exactly the same and eventually found clutch /side stand / kill switch interlocks were the problem. I got away with a clean and adjust of the side stand switch.
As Turboguzzi suggests running a wire is a quick test/repair.
