xtz 660 won't start - carb problem?
I've just changed the carb on my '92 xt as the original carb need a good clean and the choke was jammed. The new unit is off a 1998 bike and is clean and in good condition. However, the bike is refusing to run. It started last week but kept wanting to stall. I had another go at it today and now it only starts for an instant then dies and refuses to fire up again. After leaving it 5 mins it'll do the same again. There's a good spark, and there's petrol in the tank! There's 2 things I'm unsure about - 1) should the pump let fuel through when the engine isn't turning over? I pulled the hose off the carb and fuel was trickling through. 2) I haven't got hoses on the overflow pipe or the air vent pipe - does that make any difference? Apologies for my ignorance...Any suggestions apreciated!

Im not about about this but is the carb off the 98 the same as a 92 ?? Im guessing maybe not. If the bike ran before you changed the carb then the problem is 99% about the new carb.
If they are the same carbs you need to check all the jets are the same size as the 92 one, also the carb needle postion.
The fuel pump only turns when the ignition is on and the fuel pump isnt pressurised (ie, no fuel in the carb).
A trickle from the pipe is normal.
having no overflow pipe or air vent pipe shouldnt stop it running.

carb problem
Thanks for your post, I've only just seen it as i've been away for new year. I'm sure the carb is the same one - and when it had started last week that was with the new carb fitted. So something has obviously changed but i don't know what! Anyway I lost patioence and took it to my local yam shop for them to have a look at it as i was out of ideas. Assuming they sort it i'll post the problem for future reference. Happy New Year....
