yamaha xt starter not starting engine

just got this xt600e yesterday says 1998 model on documents. it push starts fine the problem is with starter it spins but it is not engaging the engine. you can hear it spinning like normal but no engine reaction. i have been told the bearing that engages the starter clutch is bad... i'm wondering how a bearing can engine an engine... anyhow. how can i fix this?

Adrian, this problem has been featured here on the Hubb a few times now and you can find infomation on this by useing the tabs at the top of the page.
However, for the moment, it could be the bearing which the flywheel sits on, it could be one or two more simple fixes if your lucky.
Checking your bushes on the starter motor would be a good place to start with. Hows the battery output, have you checked this? Have you checked the electrical earths and conections, worth doing anyway.

Tell us which bike (EG =3aj) and year it is, which may help identify the problem.

As I say, look through past postings and perhaps some one (if not me) its early hours here in Autumnal London) will be along soon to help.

awesome thank you! i haven't checked any of those... the starter definitely works it works on another xt we took it from and also the rectifier is definitely good. new battery 14 amps. the guy who i got it from who is somewhat of a mechanic says it's the bearing i can't find the tabs... can you link it to me please thank you very much. also it's a 1998 model 3aj

Adrian, if you go to the Yamaha tech main page where the threads current are shown then click on the tab "search this forum" try entering "starter clutch" there is bucket loads of information and advice as to what to look at, as well as the cautionary advice, whilst doing the job.
Recommend that you have a look in the first posts (if you haven't yet) for the schematics and part numbers for the 3aj, which Kentfallen has kindly placed there, from others also.
I see there are needle bearings involved, check out the rollers on your starter clutch whilst you are in there.

Not lazy fella, told not to even ride the bike whilst awaiting lens operation/ replacement at Moorfields from fear of infection. So working on the bike is not on my list of prioritys at the moment, hence my hanging around on the Hubb so often! I am however looking for a secure lock up close to me, not easy if only for the costs of having one and most don't even offer security. If I can find one it will be so much easier to work on in the evenings.

PS adding the kick start is not a bad idea Adrian as you have found out, bump starting that xt is not that easy, even if you should be six foot two, is it, Having a back up K/start fitted is not a bad idea.
