HU Travellers Meeting Montenegro 2019

Horizons Unlimited 6th Montenegro Travellers Meeting

Thursday Aug 8 - Sunday Aug 11, 2019 - near Kolasin, Montenegro

It's All About Overland Adventure

Whether you're a seasoned veteran with wisdom to share or a complete novice hungry for ideas and guidance, it doesn't matter if you ride a motorcycle, a bicycle, or drive an expedition vehicle...

Horizons Unlimited meetings are for everyone who dreams of adventure along the road less travelled.

Inspiring, Informing & Connecting

Some people value Horizons Unlimited events for what they learn from the unique line-up of presenters. Some people value the chance to discover new products and services at the trade stands. Some people value just kicking back with a beer among old friends and new.

Most people enjoy a little bit of everything, and everyone goes home fired-up for adventure with a smile on their face.

The event will include a packed schedule of presentations and activities. All within the relaxed and friendly atmosphere that Horizons Unlimited is known for.

Horizons Unlimited Montenegro Event Schedule

The Plan

Our plan is very simple. We will wait for your arrival on Thursday and you will be a part of our story for the next three days! Share your experiences with other participants, learn something from them or you teach them, take a ride thru unspoiled nature.

Presentations will start on Thursday afternoon, continue on Friday and Saturday during the whole day. For those who want to get in touch with our beautiful and unspoiled nature we can suggest some routes (gravel and paved) which we planned for Friday and Saturday. After Saturday barbecue, on Sunday morning everybody goes in their own direction. Some will go back home, and some who knows, maybe will continue further after getting some great ideas during the meeting.

Reaching Mongolia 2-Up and Other Stories
Two-up for four months and 20,000 km on an old, beaten-up V-Strom through epic enduro country

The Big Trip: one I've been dreaming of since buying my first touring motorcycle The idea started with one goal in mind - Mongolia. With the help of my partner and pillion rider, Jelena, the trip evolved to include the rough roads of The Silk Road, hiking hidden routes along the way, and an ultra-marathon in Mongolian backcountry. We started in May 2017 in Zagreb and the motorcycle part ended after four months. Motorcycle part? Yes. Why go back after Mongolia when there is so much more to explore! After sending the bike home, we continued our journey backpacking and using all other means of transport to move around the world for the next eight months.

This presentation is mostly about the motorcycle part with some highlights from the backpacking adventures.

Igor Doriฤ‡ & Jelena funny dance

JELENA STANIC is a keen traveler, bicycle rider, freelancer, and coffee addict. She traveled by many means, but she could hardly ever imagine traveling on a motorbike, especially going long distance. She never thought she would ever run a marathon either. In 2017, she did both. Jelena is here to tell you all about the best trip of her life.

IGOR DORIฤ† considers himself as "just a simple V-Strom rider" who found adventure and excitement in motorcycle trave. His travels started in 2008 and, so far, he's rolled about 135,000 kilometers on his trusty V-Strom. In the first few trips, he explored western and central Europe until he discovered the East, where he travels each year to explore his and the V-Strom's limits. Travelling east is where the idea to do an ultimate trip was born.

India 2018
From Slovenia to India and back

In two months, I traveled 20,000 kilometers by motorbike, across Turkey, Iran and Pakistan to India and back. Due to the dangerous situation, I traveled through the province of Beluchistan to Pakistan accompanied by the security service, and the police and the army were there to ensure that tourists are not spoiled by anything. I remember primarily Iran in terms of friendly and helpful people, and in the presence of mosques, markets and bazaars, and Pakistan and India, in particular, due to traffic chaos that prevails between pedestrians, trains, motor vehicles and animals that are mostly illuminated by road on roads moving all over. (Google translate !)

A 47-day journey from Podgorica to Vladivostok and back!

My first big trip! And I finally found what I like to do - travel. :-) 26.600 km, 47 days, my friend Dezi, Golf 2, a tent, and lots of wonderful people on the road.

STEFAN VUJOVIC says: "My travels to distant places is something that fills me with positive energy. My last trip was in the Middle East and the Caucasus with highlights of Iraq, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Nagorno Karabakh. 19 days, 9000 km.

Genghis Khan Expedition 2018

Silk Road Adventure 2014
Summer 2014, from Croatia to the Pamir: 4 riders, 18 countries, 21 000 km

It was my first adventure, my first trip. Before it, the top ''advenuture'' was a 400-km trip. I've met three other bikers on the HUBB forum and I've decided I'm not going to just dream my dreams, but to live them. I quit my job and joined them for the adventure. It was two-and-a-half months and 21.000 km long expedition along the main routes of the Silk Road. We visited Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Serbia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, and Bulgaria. It was a memorable journey where I learned a lot about myself. We rode the immense Kazakh steppes, sailed across the Caspian Sea, saw the pearls of Uzbekistan, the deserts of Turkmenistan and the mighty Pamir. It was a life-changing experince. The best part was fulfilling my dreams of riding those countries.

Stojan Gajic

Genghis Khan Expedition 2018
Summer 2018, from Croatia to Mongolia: 3 riders, 13 countries, 25 000 km on bike and 5000 km on train

Three friends from two different countries (Poland and Croatia) joined for another (second) epic adventure: Genghis Khan Expedition 2018! It was a two-and-a-half month and 25.000 km long journey. We sailed the Black Sea, went over the Caucasus, explored the Russian Altay, and Mongolia. Once on the other side of the globe we couldn't skip the Transsiberian train. We rode the paths of Genghis Khan and his armies from the furthest point on the west (Grobniฤko polje) until the heart of his Empire, Kharakhorin. Along the journey we also visited: Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Mongolia. It was a great experience with two really great frinds I met for the first time in 2014 on the HUBB forum!

STOJAN GAJIC is a 42-year-old family doctor who got his first bike in 2009. He has done two big trips since then with friend he met on the Horizons Unlimited HUBB forum. Before these expeditions, his longest trip was 400 kilometres!

Six Wheels to India, Two Wheels Back
How did a 5-month plan turn into 14 months on the road to India and back?

This is the story of a five-month plan to travel from the U.K. to Indonesia in a strange combination of jeep and motorbike... and how we did not reach Indonesia after all and ended up travelling for 14 months, got stuck in India for five of those months, lost jobs, and came back after 54,000km - and then decided we won't return to a place which was our home for 10 years.

How Not to Get Sh#$%*$s
Preventing, curing, and surviving stomach mishaps

It happened to me, it probably happened to you. You're ready for the adventure, have a good dinner and, in the morning, instead of heading to the mountains, you're heading straight for the toiletโ€ฆ which if, you're lucky, has water and toilet paper. If you're unlucky, well, let's notโ€ฆ contemplate that. What can we do to prevent, cure and recover from stomach problems on the road? Find out more with Pavel.

Pavel Kunc

PAVEL KUNC is originally from Czechia, and had planned to move to Londa, U.K., for a year - he stayed for 13! Riding a Honda CB500X around Europe and, in 2017, rode from the U.K. to India and back to Czechia in 14 months ad 54,000 km even though the original plan was for five months. It seems "plan" is not a part of his vocabulary!

LOTS of presentations to come! As people register to present we'll list them here.

How about you? We're all here to learn, and there's LOTS to learn! We want to do more presentations and seminars - but we need volunteers to give them! Any topic you can contribute having to do with motorcycle travel, maintenance, planning etc, lasting 20 minutes or more, would be great. Please contact us here to volunteer.

It's Not Failure If You Don't Tell Anyone
Turning a trip around can be the best U-turn you ever made

A small budget, cheap bike, limited research and no one to go with has never stopped Graham from going. A light-hearted history of how he was thrown into the deep end of overland travel, persevered, succeeded, and then with inexcusable confidence, went on to fail spectacularly on the next trip. How sometimes turning around can turn the trip around and ultimately fulfilment is found.

Graham is the author of three books, resident Adventure Rider Radio presenter, and occasional contributor on Adventurer Bike TV - proving beyond argument via several media that having little knowledge and strong desires have been enough to satisfy many travel yearnings. Doing his best to inspire, encourage, and inform without too much emphasis on what could go wrong.

Journeys That Free Your Spirit

The final destination is not the goal. The meaning of the journey is traveling, getting to know people, new cultures, customs, admiring nature and enjoying the freedom of the spirit. So far, Novina has visited 66 countries on five continents, each of which has fascinated him with its specialties, beauties, nature, and people. Once you taste the magic of travel and freedom on the journey, it's hard to tame your restless spirit. It's hard to be home and think about the countries you have not yet visited, about the countries that you would like to visit, and which would offer you plenty of pleasure and joy.

Magical Solo Touring on a Honda 125 ccm
One girl, one little motorbike, dozens of adventures, and thousands of kilometers

Olga will share some of her solo trips across Europe accompanied by her brave little Honda. For almost eight year, they have been exploring some of the nicest corners of Europe and, this year, she decided to change the bike to XR's bigger sister CRF 250 L, following her deepest belief that the only right choice for her is still a small Honda. She provides an ultimate guide to travelling when you have no money, no big bike, and not much mechanical experience whatsoever - relying only on the power of a smile, trust, a bit of luck, Couchsurfing, and friendships around Europe.

Originally from Poland, Olga is an HR consultant living in Prague. She has travelled solo around Europe since 2009. Commuting forever moving from one place to another - and not only on a motorbike - Olga is passionate about music, art, travels, and psychology.

From Caucasus With Love
From Zagreg to Caucasus and back: a glimpse of the vibe from a 40-day trip

Friends Hrvoje and Igor recount their 40-day trip from Zagreb, Croatia, to Caucasus and back, and all the interesting places in between. Their long-time fascination with the cradle of the so-called western civilization crowned their adventurous-cultural expedition. The richness of this part of the world shines through cultural heritage, beautifully diverse nature, and, most important above all, the geopolitical positions that shaped the history of these interesting and hospitable Caucasians. After all, the question remains: do we have anything in common? Maybe more we are willing to admit...

This trip to the Caucasus is their first longer trip by motorcycles and, in a way, a kind of preparation for much longer, bigger trips that include more than two continents. As soon as possible...

How We Failed at Reaching the Pamir
How We Succeeded in Finding Adventure

1. How We Failed at Reaching the Pamir

After years of saving and planning for an adventurous trip through Iran, Central Asia and Mongolia, mechanical misfortunes on the road totally altered Sofie and Jo's plans. It turned a well-planned trip into a real adventure. They will talk about all the problems encountered and how they dealt with them, but, most of all, about the wonderful things that happen when you are vulnerable and in trouble in a strange country. They will not bore you with lots of technical discussions, but rather share the emotional roller coaster they lived, the generous help of the people they met and the experiences they would not have had otherwise.

2. How We Succeeded in Finding Adventure

A five-month trip to Central Asia and back. At least, that was the plan. When you set out for a longer trip you know where you start, but you never know where you will end up. So, Tajikistan turned into Nordkapp. After suffering serious delays due to mechanical problems in Iran, Sofie and Jo radically changed their plans and turned north instead of heading east. They'll share the highlights of how this still turned out into an awesome journey and what they have learned from it.

Jo and Sofie are two crazy spirits with a passion for motorcycles and travelling. They love to pack up and leave, to discover new countries and civilizations, to boldly go where… well… relatively few have gone before! Unlike the Starship Enterprise crew, they like to keep things down to earth.

Motorcycling the Americas

We are currently two years into a round the world motorcycle trip that started in Seattle, WA, USA going south to Ushuaia, Argentina then from Uruguay we rode a cargo freighter with our motorcycles to Antwerp, Belgium. From Europe we plan to ride to Southeast Asia.

Shannon and Mike Mills in Chile.

The cargo freighter we rode from South America to Europe was a five-week journey so we used that time to produce a 24-minute video combining photos and video from our 16-months through North, Central, and South America. It is a fun representation of life on the road in Latin America.

Shannon and Mike Mills at end of Ruta 3.

Following the video we will discuss what it took to prepare for a multi-year motorcycle trip and answer all related questions. We will also take this time to explore the many resources we have available (for free) on our website such as expense, accommodation, and border reports per country as well as budget preparatory tools, weather spreadsheets, and of course our travel articles and photos. We will also touch on having short motorcycle adventures within a life of jobs, mortgage payments, and other commitments.

Enduro Ride Montenegro

Dear Adventurists, Let me guide you through the fantastic enduro world and give you a glimpse into the magnificent trails through Montenegrin mountains, deep forests, mirror-like lakes and superb mountain peaks

Ivan Drobnjak.

During the working hours I run operations and finances for one department in super yacht marina Porto Montenegro, but in every second of free time I'm trying to explore unknown off road mountain trails and paths...

Ivan Drobnjak.

Since enduro rides became my passion, I have founded motorbike guided agency in Montenegro, with friend of mine.

Ivan Drobnjak.

Like all of us, my first ride was on brothers Tomos automatic, and that was an awesome feeling. Many years after I bought my first motorbike. It was an Aprilia rs 125 sport bike, not long after that, the same brother came up with two cross motorbikes on the trail... and from that moment the way I look at two wheels is completely changed... Do I have to mention that despite faults of the first bike (no brakes, no power, no el starter, air filter...) it was love at the first ride. That 81 honda xl250 is still in my garage.

Central and Western Europe

Life is made out of moments, lots of them are lost through time but some of them end up sticking with you. I try to make mine count. I try to make 'em stick and that's where motorcycle comes in. So many of my memorable memories are one way or the other linked with motorcycles. From young age stealing another lap on little Honda, through my teenage years trying to impress girls on the scooter, until now, exploring different places and meeting amazing people on my tourer. Not all memories are pleasant ones, but the great ones outweigh not so great ones by far and that makes me coming back.

Djordje Markovic.

Most of my tours were through Central and Western Europe. I did own a bike while I lived in US, but did not get to explore with it nearly as much as I would like I did. The good thing is that with every trip I keep extending my boundaries and I intend keep doing it as much as I can.

Horizons Unlimited Montenegro Ride-outs

If you don't want to participate on daily presentation we have prepared some ride-outs for you. All rides have been prepared so that you see how beautiful nature is in Montenegro (lakes, rivers, mountain peaks...) We prepared five different routes with different levels of difficulties. Every ride (if it's interesting for participants) will start in the morning so they can be finished before start of first afternoon presentation. Of course we do have guides for these rides, but if somebody wants to go alone, we will provide them with maps and route information. If you want, camp owners can arrange some lunch packets for these rides (€10 euros per person).

Join the Volunteer Crew

From welcoming travellers at the gate, to taking care of the campsite and making sure all the presentations run smoothly, the success of every HU event relies on the enthusiasm of its volunteer crew.

"What a wonderful bunch of people. I had no idea how much fun I'd have by helping out!"

Dee Masters, volunteer extraordinaire!

"It was my absolute pleasure to be able to give something back to the HU community and working with such great folks really made the event special."

Volunteering is a great way to make new friends, get more involved with Horizons Unlimited and have loads of fun! You can sign up to volunteer when you register for the meeting, OR click here if you have already registered and want to add volunteering.

Be a Presenter

We're inviting submissions for presentations, so whether you're attending the event or exploring a distant continent, if you've got a story to tell or expertise to share we'd like to hear from you.

We love to hear stories about your travel adventures, especially if you have great pics! Also, practical how-to sessions such as roadside cooking, navigation / GPS, trip prep and planning, adventure motorcycling medicine, packing light, setting your bike up, communications / blogging from the road, self-publishing your story, yoga for bikers, bodging / bike maintenance, self-defense, photography, videography, tire repair, safe riding techniques, how to pick up your bike, off-road riding, all are of interest.

There are 45 minute and 100 minute sessions available for talks, workshops, demos and live web chats.

Click here to submit your ideas

PLEASE NOTE:

Submitting a Presenter registration DOES NOT mean you will automatically be included in the schedule, as we can have more presenters than available presentation slots. We will confirm one way or the other as soon as we can (but not immediately!)

Departing or Returning?

If you're planning an expedition, why not make the Horizons Unlimited meeting your official start point? Or maybe you're nearing the completion of a journey and would like a very public welcome home? Of course you might just be passing through and fancy marking a key stage of your travels?

We'd love to make you a big part of the meeting, so feel free to get in touch and tell us your plans.

HU Events Refund Policy

Like adventures, life can throw surprises our way. Stuff happens. While we would love for you to join the fun and connect with everyone at our events, we understand that you (and the funds) may be needed elsewhere. We'll catch up later!

On our side, we know you appreciate that we have financial commitments to venues and caterers!

The best way to let us know that you're unable to attend an event is to reply to the Registration Confirmation Email you got from us when you first signed up.

Up to 30 days prior to event start, we will refund all fees in full less a $10 (or €9 or £8) handling fee and PayPal charges. At your request, we can apply your Event Registration and all fees to any subsequent HU event you wish in that year or following year.

Up to 15 days prior to event start, we will refund only the camping/accommodation and food packages in full less a $10 (or €9 or £8) handling fee and PayPal charges. At your request, we can apply your Event Registration fee (with no handling fee) to any subsequent HU Event you wish in that year or following year. If you purchased a t-shirt, we will ship it to the mailing address you provide.

Within 15 days of the event start, there will be no refunds. At your request, we can apply your registration fee (with no handling fee) to any subsequent HU event you wish in that year or following year. If you purchased a t-shirt, we will ship it to the mailing address you provide.

If WE cancel an event:

We are constantly evaluating the situation for every event, and very much err on the side of caution. We will endeavour to announce "Final" decision one month or more before the event, but the situation COULD change closer to time, and we could be required by law to cancel.

If we are forced to cancel for COVID or natural disaster, we will roll your registration over to next year automatically.

If you want to transfer your existing registration to any other HU event in the world, just let us know.

Need a full refund? PLEASE REPLY to your original Registration Confirmation email to make it easier for us to find. If you can't find it, please email a request to: events-c (AT) horizonsunlimited(-)com with the subject line: "Refund event-name event-year"

New to Horizons Unlimited?

Horizons Unlimited was founded in 1997 by Grant and Susan Johnson following their journey around the world on a BMW R80 G/S motorcycle. The website, HUBB forum and regular events across the globe have inspired thousands of people to follow their dreams and take the road less travelled.

Membership - Show you're proud to be a Horizons Unlimited Traveller!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love overland adventure travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events such as this one (18 this year!); we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, the HUBB or to receive the e-zine. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.

You can join at a reduced rate as part of your meeting registration. Note that new Memberships with your Meeting Registration are applied as of the Meeting date or as soon as possible thereafter, not earlier, unless you make a special request in the Comments box when you register.
