When and where to go in Greece: Your ultimate guide

With its unique mix of ancient history, stunning landscapes, and sunny beaches, Greece has something for everyone. Whether you're looking for cultural immersion, island-hopping, or a quiet retreat, planning your trip for the right time and destination is the key to an unforgettable experience. To help you navigate the options, here’s your guide on when and where to go in Greece.

There’s a Greek trip for every season

Greece’s summer season runs from June to August and brings an influx of tourists. A summer trip is perfect if you’re a beach lover but can be challenging for those who prefer quieter travel.

With Greece being one of the countries recently hit by extreme summer heatwaves, many UK travellers opt to visit in spring (April to May) or autumn (September to October). The weather is mild, the crowds are less intense, and the conditions are excellent for sightseeing and activities.

Winter, from November to March, is quiet and cool. Although ferries to the islands are reduced, it can be the ideal time to do some cultural exploration of Athens or Thessaloniki.

Island vs. Mainland: Choose Your Greek adventure

If you’re looking for picturesque beaches, vibrant nightlife, or archaeological sites such as Delos, then head for islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete. For a quieter atmosphere, check out islands like Milos, formed by a volcano, or historic Naxos.
The mainland boasts landmarks, lush mountains, and quaint towns. To avoid peak-season crowds, consider destinations like Meteora, with its monasteries atop rock formations. Or go down to the Peloponnese peninsula and visit ancient sites like Olympia and Mycenae.

Tailor your holiday around your interests

Greece has something for every interest. History enthusiasts, for example, have long headed for Athens, with its iconic Acropolis, or Crete’s Knossos Palace.

If you’re a foodie, Thessaloniki’s cuisine blends Greek, Ottoman, and Balkan influences, offering mouthwatering street food. The island of Naxos is famed for traditional Greek dishes, including cheeses and fresh seafood.

For outdoor enthusiasts, there is nothing like hiking in Samaria Gorge or Mount Olympus against a stunning backdrop. Nightlife seekers will find Mykonos and Ios buzzing with beach parties. For a quieter stay, take in Corfu’s Venetian architecture and rich history.

Navigating peak season and finding hidden gems

If you’re visiting during peak season and want to avoid crowds, plan out your journey. Book your accommodation, car rentals, and any excursions in advance, especially for popular islands such as Santorini.

If you want to go off the beaten track, consider Zakynthos Island, Syros, or Greece’s northern region, which offer beauty without the tourist presence. Renting a private villa in one of these quieter areas is a great alternative to hotels – you can relax in privacy while still enjoying stunning landscapes.

Practicalities: Insurance, currency, travel advisories

Before travelling, get adequate travel insurance. Purchase euros before you leave for the best rates. Credit cards are accepted throughout Greece but carry cash for smaller establishments. Also, read up on local customs such as modest dress when visiting religious sites.

Greece is very safe, but check official travel advisories so you’re aware of political or economic developments that may impact your trip.

Greece: Something for everyone

Greece offers something for every traveller, but choosing the right season and location makes a big difference. Whether you’re craving an island escape or an adventure, planning ahead ensures a memorable trip.
