On The Way (Auf dem Weg): Part 01
A RTW motorcycle trip comes full-circle after 6.5 years

After 9.5 years as a woodwork intructor in Ethiopia, I gave myself a break (12-18 months) to find similar work in South East Asia (a.k.a. travel) and a bit further to Australia to visit my cousin near Brisbane. After 20 months, I reached in Australia after having ridden through many countries (Iran, Syria, Sudan, Jemen, Tibet, China, Vietnam), including some job interviews in Laos and Vietnam. When I learned I got the job in Laos, I had been in Australia for four months and now needed to make a decision: take the job or continue my journey.

To be honest, it was an easy decision - I kept going. And kept going I did, to South America, Cuba, and waiting for the spring season again. At one point, it came to mind that it would be really cool to return to the Black Forest in Germany on the very same motorcycle I first left with. After crossing six continents, about 70 countries, and covering about 255,067 km, I came full-circle to the very same spot I left 6.5 years ago... at the doorstep of my mother's house in Welschensteinach.

From Germany's Black Forest, MARTIN BRUCKER traveled from March 2010 to October 2016 around the world on his trusty BMW G650 Xchallenge. He covered about 255,067 km crossing about 70 countries "On The Way".

When the road ends - Beating the Darien Gap on a Boatercycle

Then you arrive at a point where there is no road to continue. Between Panama and Colombia, there is one of the most dense jungles of this planet: The Darien! Stretching from the Pacific coast from the West to the Atlantic coast on the East, the Darien is home to many different groups of guerrilla fighters, drug smugglers and randomly scattered but notorious tribal groups which makes it to one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on Earth.

A perfect challenge for Dylan! As the first man ever he sails, solo, 650km around Darien, on the Pacific Ocean from Panama into Colombia on a self-built raft propelled by a motorcycle and experiences one of a kind adventure! A journey that is not only takes him across country borders but also tests his personal limits.

Click to see a video excerpt of Dylan Samarawickrama crossing the Darien Gap on a boatercycle!

Constant break downs, storms, currents and zero sailing experience were some of the challenges of his incredible journey. When things go from bad to worse, dolphins come to his rescue! Watch the video excerpt of his trip.

Dylan Samarawickrama has travelled around the world for three and half years and modestly says he has 'done some interesting adventures'.

Dylan's book 'Am Ende der Strasse' has now been published in German, the English version 'When the Road Ends' is promised for this year! Ask him to autograph your copy at the meeting!

2 Decades World Travel & Adventure

A tour through all the travels and (winter) adventures, done on sports bikes, by a mad Dutchmen.

From the moment that it all started until the ultimate goal, a ride to the North Pole, in the near future, that's what the presentation, enlivened with videos, photos and a healthy dose of humour will cover. In between we experience a 3 years and 160,000 kilometre lasting World Travel on a Fireblade, during the time that communication with the home front still went by fax! We travel 250,000 kilometre around the world on an R1 on a very extreme way! We tackle the North Cape successfully - in the winter – after an earlier attempt had to be broken off due to worn homemade studs.

Sjaak Lucassen at Pyramids, Egypt.

We visit the USA and Canada for a ride through temperatures colder then minus 30 and we ride over the Polar Ice north of Alaska, towing a huge sledge. Info on www.R1goesExtreme.com

Because motorcycle vacations felt always too short I started to travel. Before I knew it I got bitten by the travel bug. The result was that I spent about 10 years of my live on the road, using rather unusual bikes. I ride sport bikes. The reason is simple. I find it more important to use the right bike for my heart then the right bike for the terrain. During time my travels became more and more extreme. The last one was on the Polar Ice north of Alaska. The next one hopefully to the North Pole.

Beginner Mistakes: A Comedy Story

Without any experience, Nora and Jojo (Johannes) were beginner travellers who left on an overland adventure. Without taking themselves too seriously, they share their embarrassing packing lists and the mistakes they made. Now with some experience under their belts, they are ambassadors for traveling lighter by leaving some things behind. Find out more about their packing tips and guidelines for travel preparations.

Adventurism Mindset

We all do it: over-prepare and overpack! In this reflective talk, Nora offers compelling tips to pack less by bringing the right mindset. She shares stories about her first overland adventure. Without any experience she packed her bags and left. She talks about how to deal with the daily challenges on the road and how to grow with the experience. In the end, she learned that it doesn't matter how you prepare or pack, the most important thing you can bring is the right mindset.

NORA and JOJO are a couple brought together by the adventure of motorcycle overland travel. They have plenty of stories to share from their individual solo travels and from exploring the world together. They are a happy couple with a shared passion: Adventure.

Even coming home on a container ship from Philadelphia, U.S.A. to Antwerp was an adventure itself.

JORIS JOORE has done several trips already, from North Cape to Naples. Last year, he went around the world, starting in his hometown Utrecht and kept heading east until he was back home again. He has visited over 25 countries and 22 states on that trip, covering over 50.000 kilometres and two oceans. He and his bike returned from New York on a container ship. He has written a book about his RTW trip.

Putting Off the Finishing Line
The highs and lows of 6 years motorcycling around the world. Can a favourite place in the world be found?

Daniel set off to circumnavigate the world by motorcycle many years ago. Halfway into the trip (Germany – New Zealand), he found the love of his life, Josephine. Like Daniel, Jo loves travelling and it didn't take much to get her excited about motorcycles. On two bikes they continued the second leg of the journey together (Alaska – Argentina). At some point, enjoying dinner, camping on the beach somewhere, another traveller asked us: "What will you do when you've reached your destination (Ushuaia) in a few days? Return home?" Our souls were filled with wonderful experiences while our pockets were running out of money. Daniel and Jo had only played with the idea of shipping the bikes to Cape Town and ride home through Africa. Without giving his answer too much thought, Daniel replied: "We're more afraid of going back home to a regular life than facing Africa without money." Josephine and Daniel talk about the highs and lows of six years motorcycle travel, covering five continents, 100 countries - riding solo and as a couple.

Daniel and Josephine are from Germany. He's been riding motorcycles since he was 7 years old. When he was first allowed to ride on the road at the age of 18, the bike naturally became an essential instrument for exploring the world. Josephine has loved travelling for as long as she can remember. She used to be a backpacker, but became a motorcycle traveller when she met "someone". They have been riding around the world on two bikes ever since.

Trip Report
Our Packing List

1. Amsterdam to Anywhere: Trip Report

Leonie and Peter quit their jobs and rented out the house to travel around the world riding their two trusty Honda CRF250Ls over 100,000 km through more than 50 countries on 5 continents. They explored Africa, rode through the Americas and zig-zagged across Asia to arrive back in Europe three years later. Visiting 56 countries, meeting friendly people and experiencing true hospitality. And all along the way: amazing wildlife, beautiful nature, delicious food and great riding! An amazing journey they want to share with you! During the presentation they will give you a seat on their bikes to ride around the world together. Telling you about the amazing hospitality in Libya, the hippos next to their tent in Kenya, New Years celebrations at the most southern tip of the world, exploring ancient Inca routes in Peru, plowing through the snow in Canada, using the Motorcycle Highway in Malaysia, riding through ever-smiling Myanmar, making new friends in Pakistan and riding on top of the world in the Himalayas. All of this, of course, with lots and lots of pictures! They hope to inspire you to get on your bike and start exploring our beautiful world!

2. Amsterdam to Anywhere: Our Packing List
What to take and how to pack? Inside information about our packing list, the gear and the luggage system.

How many pairs of socks? Do we need a satellite telephone? Which tools are you using? What tent do you sleep in? Where to pack your gas stove? Which medication did you take? Why did you use soft luggage instead of hard panniers? Where did you keep your laptop? How many kilo's did you carry? Before Leonie and Peter left on their trip, they had hundreds of questions like this. They asked friends who had been on the road, read travel reports and visited an HU Meeting to find answers. The information helped them enormously to prepare for the trip.

Now, after having been on the road for almost three years, they want to help future adventurers to prepare for their trip and answer all of these questions. There are 1001 different ways to pack your bike for a long trip, so there is no 'perfect way'. They will focus on the gear they chose and packing all your stuff on the bike. They will share their packing list, show you their favorite items, tell what you should not forget, but also what you should definitely leave at home. Lots of practical information, with pictures and opportunity to see and feel the gear from up close.

Northern North America
From New York across Canada to Prudhoe Bay - The Dalton Highway

After shipping his motorcycle to the United States, Alexander started out from New York City to explore the wild and remote parts of North America. During five months of his journey, he rode up north along the historic "Alaska Highway" where he discovered the wilderness of Alberta, the Yukon Territory, and Klondike by also driving the lonely "Top of the World Highway". When he got to Alaska, he made it all the way to the northern end of the continent by reaching Deadhorse and Prudhoe Bay after accomplishing the remote stretch of the "Dalton Highway". Escaping the quick approaching winter, he then headed south along the "Stewart-Cassiar Highway", crossing British Columbia and the Rocky Mountains back into the US.

He will share his experiences and encounters from the northern parts of North America and will give you some ideas of how to behave and what to do if you encounter a bear or other wildlife, which gear to choose and what the best time might be to explore Canada and Alaska. Join in for some great pictures and stories from America's north.

ALEXANDER CONRAD has traveled more than 180,000 km over the last seven years, across numerous countries in Europe, western Asia and, lately, North America. Born and raised in Germany, he is now living in California and giving "home" a short visit.

Next Exit: Afrika

Thirteen months, 2-up, around the world (almost!) on the good ol' Africa Twin

We decided to do it! We took a year off to see parts of the world we had never seen. We did the minimum planning, prepared our good old Africa Twin a little, and left Germany in August 2016. We returned in September 2017. Going to India was the first part we planned... and then where to after?? An amazing year of unexpected adventures.

TILL GÖLDNER and his partner CARO MITTNACHT rode 2-up on an Africa Twin from Germany to India, Korea, Vladivostok, and then back to Germany, passing through Mongolia and the "Stans".

RTW: The most important things to bring

Whether you are a well-organised German or a careless Englishman, here is what you really should prepare for a wonderful journey.

Dan - I left England without a drivers license, essential tools and the wrong clothing and still I thought I was prepared. By meeting more prepared riders (mainly German) I realised that being under prepared didn't detract from my experience but enhanced it.

Rolf - Having had 2½ years before I started out for my round-the-world trip, I felt well prepared and organised: off-road trainings, vaccinations, first aid course, photo workshops, and interviews with mechanics – I did it all. Being prepared in a pretty much perfect way made me feel safer, but it did not teach me what is really important on a long journey through foreign countries.

Rolf Lange.

Being open-minded, having a positive attitude and permanently wearing a smile are prerequisites to maximising your enjoyment. It's all about the people; those daily random encounters wherever you stop or whenever you need help make the adventure perfect.

In an entertaining way, Dan and Rolf will describe why your pack list is not the most important thing before setting out and how the wonderful people of the world made their amazing adventures so unique. Come with an open mind, ask many questions and contribute as much as you want to make this presentation the one that makes you say 'It's my turn to feed my soul'.

Dan from England and Rolf from Germany, typical stereotypes of their home countries. Dan under prepared and carefree and Rolf fully prepared & organised. They both rode for over 500 days but only 15 together; they had amazing experiences in a combined total of over 50 different countries on 5 continents.

A dream come true on a Yamaha XT 600

Thomas' first big motorcycle trip was a trip around the world from 2015-2016. He always wanted to get out of his hometown and so the dream begun. He had saved enough money to make his dreams come true. He quit his job and hit the road. During the trip he had a lot of friends who joined him for a while - Thomas was happy to share this great experience.

Shorter than planned, but still far enough
Our round-the-world trip shortened to a still-amazing journey from the Caribbean to the end of the world and back.

It was in 2009 on a quite rainy trip through southern Norway when I suggested to my wife to do a trip around the Baltic Sea because of the much better weather there. The answer of my couch potato just blew me away - "Why only the Baltic Sea and not around the world?" Happily, I agreed and so it began! :-). Well-prepared and meticulously planned, we started in Cancún, Mexico, in July 2012 to our supposed world tour. Only a month later we realised that going slower than planned - and without a plan at all - would serve us better. So we spent one year exploring the Americas from the Caribbean to the farthest south, and back to Venezuela.

We are a well-seasoned couple with never-ending curiosity about how people live somewhere else. So we simply mount our bikes from time to time and go looking. As both of us studied environmental sciences, we are always prone to admiring amazing landscapes.

Jalan-Jalan Sumatra - An adventure with pictures and sounds

Sonja and Claudio traveled through Sumatra on two small typical motorbikes. They met wonderful people and learned to know the life of the Batak tribe. But chaotic traffic, exotic landscapes and great encounters also belong to this adventure. With a microphone they took on the atmosphere, voices and conversations of the trip. In their presentation, 'Jalan-jalan Sumatra' they show not only photos but also the sounds of the trip.

Here is a trailer of the presentation.

We (Sonja & Claudio) love to travel and we love to talk about travels. For this we run a radio show called PEGASOREISE. Once a month we produce a podcast, on which you can listen to the stories on the road.

From Cologne via the Silk Road to Tokyo
- Circumnavigation of Afghanistan and China

The first part of my trip was five months through Africa from Kenya to South Africa. The second part took me 10 months through America from Argentina to Central America to Canada. In the third part, I traveled 17 months through Asia. I drove along the Silk Road through Central Asia and Russia to Japan. From there I traveled across Southeast and South Asia back to Europe. My three trips led me between July 2011 and September 2015 by a total of 32 months and 130.00 km through 66 countries and 4 continents.

Hartmut Heldt.

After 30 years of work in a public agency I went with 58 years in early retirement. When I thought about what I could do with the extra free time, I noticed my hobbies traveling and motorcycling first. Why not both? So the plan was, my 30-year old dream of a world tour to finally realize.

Holy Cow! – Going Naked in India
and Zig-zagging from Ushuaia to Alaska

Holy Cow! – Going Naked in India

Double-crossing India and Nepal. 33.000 km, 15 months. From Ladakh to Kanyakumari , from the Punjab to Nagaland and through Nepal. Twice.

At first glance the little KTM Duke 390 might not be the perfect bike for dirt roads and white water crossings in the Himalayas of India and Nepal, but she's naked alright, and on her I managed to dodge all the holy cows the traffic mayhem of the two Hindu countries could throw at me in 1 ½ years. Trust me, many a time I shouted expletives of a stronger nature than just an astonished 'holy cow' into my helmet. In the end, it was all worth it, though!

Incredible India is the official slogan, and truer words were never spoken! From the Taj Mahal to the beaches of Goa, the soaring, ancient temples of Tamil Nadu or the splendid forts and palaces of Rajastan, that's what comes to mind when India is mentioned. There is a very different India too, little visited, hidden and difficult to get to - harsh passes and bad roads leading over high passes of the Himalayas to Tibet. This presentation will have you itching to saddle your steed and head east asap!

Frank Voellm on the Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia.

Zig-zagging from Ushuaia to Alaska

Three years. 150.000 km. If I wanted to have a good look at the Americas a 2nd time, that's what I'd do agian!

Crossing an ocean by ship was one of my childhood dreams. The opportunity finally came when I was in my mid-40s and boarded the Grimaldi freighter in Hamburg bound for Buenos Aires. That was in 2010, just two months after I had been here at my first ever HU meeting in Germany.

Towing - two bikes, one engine

Ever broke down in the middle of nowhere with no way of fixing? If you're with a buddy, towing bike by bike is the way out.

After getting stuck on a Laotian dirt track last year, having to tow bike to bike for two hours on dirt in the dark and then towing over 100k to the next city, our so far basic towing abilities had to improve rapidly. Having towed about 200k on part of our RTW trip, we'd like to share what we've learnt, see how you address the issue and discuss the pros and cons of different techniques.

Towing is an awkward way of riding your bike, but practice and know-how can save your day - or even more. This workshop will start with a short introduction, video footage and a bit of theory basics and then give a demonstration of towing "peg to peg". You can bring your own bike and give it a go, to get a feel for it and help if needed.

We believe that everyone riding as a team should be able to tow each other - so get a rope and practice!

Juri Klusak's bike.

Juri says: "I am 26, study geography in Kiel. Travelled a month on an old Heinkel Tourist scooter through Norway in 2011 and spent the last 20 months on the road attempting an RTW - then my Mom got a heart attack and I had to return prematurely from Malaysia. I am quite into photography and luckily could get a bunch of sponsors for my trips - travelling is not easy at 600€ a month... My website is currently being rebuilt, if you like check out my pictures on Flicker.

Travel Tips
Inventive tips which have proven to be great value

Being on the road, you need to be creative, especially when you have to repair your bike or gear in the middle of nowhere. What we think that does not work in 'civilised' countries seems to work if you need it to! Looking at a 'problem' while throwing the conventional (conservative) thinking away and by seeing it as a challenge rather than an annoying issue will bring you, in the end, not only a good result, but also a great story to tell. Sjaak will give several examples that were of great value to him. Presented with his usual humour, Sjaak also hopes you'll bring in your experiences and stories.

Sjaak started to travel because motorcycle vacations always felt too short. Before he knew it, he was bitten by the travel bug, resulting in about 10 years of his life on the road using rather unusual bikes. Sjaak rides sport bikes. The reason is simple: he finds it more important to use the right bike for his heart than for the terrain. Over time, his travels became more and more extreme. The last one was on the polar ice north of Alaska. Next goal is to reach the North Pole with the bike that he is currently building, 'aRctic1'.

Join the Volunteer Crew

From welcoming travellers at the gate, to taking care of the campsite and making sure all the presentations run smoothly, the success of every HU event relies on the enthusiasm of its volunteer crew.

Dee Masters, volunteer extraordinaire, greets arrivals at HUBB UK.

"What a wonderful bunch of people. I had no idea how much fun I'd have by helping out!"

"It was my absolute pleasure to be able to give something back to the HU community and working with such great folks really made the event special."

Volunteering is a great way to make new friends, get more involved with Horizons Unlimited and have loads of fun! You can sign up to volunteer when you register for the meeting, OR click here if you have already registered and want to add volunteering.

Be a Presenter

We're inviting submissions for presentations, so whether you're attending the event or exploring a distant continent, if you've got a story to tell or expertise to share we'd like to hear from you.

We love to hear stories about your travel adventures, especially if you have great pics! Also, practical how-to sessions such as roadside cooking, navigation / GPS, trip prep and planning, adventure motorcycling medicine, packing light, setting your bike up, communications / blogging from the road, self-publishing your story, yoga for bikers, bodging / bike maintenance, self-defense, photography, videography, tire repair, safe riding techniques, how to pick up your bike, off-road riding, all are of interest.

There are 40 minute and 90 minute sessions available for talks, workshops, demos and live web chats.

Click here to submit your ideas

PLEASE NOTE:

Submitting a Presenter registration DOES NOT mean you will automatically be included in the schedule, as we often have more presenters than available presentation slots. We will confirm one way or the other as soon as we can (but not immediately!)

Departing or Returning?

If you're planning an expedition, why not make the Horizons Unlimited meeting your official start point? Or maybe you're nearing the completion of a journey and would like a very public welcome home? Of course you might just be passing through and fancy marking a key stage of your travels?

We'd love to make you a big part of the meeting, so feel free to get in touch and tell us your plans.

New to Horizons Unlimited?

Horizons Unlimited was founded in 1997 by Grant and Susan Johnson following their journey around the world on a BMW R80 G/S motorcycle. The website, HUBB forum and regular events across the globe have inspired thousands of people to follow their dreams and take the road less travelled.

Membership - Show you're proud to be a Horizons Unlimited Traveller!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love overland adventure travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events such as this one (18 this year!); we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, the HUBB or to receive the e-zine. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.

You can join at a reduced rate as part of your meeting registration. Note that new Memberships with your Meeting Registration are applied as of the Meeting date or as soon as possible thereafter, not earlier, unless you make a special request in the Comments box when you register.
