Shipments done by Travellers

The HU Shipping Database!

From THIS page, you can find details of shipments ALREADY MADE by travellers, both air and sea, so you can plan your own shipment.

For each shipment, the details include Shipping Date, Cost, Shipper Contact details and a Description of the experience, often including very detailed and extremely useful information about the requirements for crating or the paperwork involved at the destination location.

If you are aware of any more up-to-date information, or you know of any shipping details for locations which aren't listed below:

Please let us know here for minor details, or
Submit information on a shipment YOU HAVE ALREADY MADE here.

Thanks to all who have contributed this information, keep it coming!

NOTE: This is not our normal view, but Google's API has somehow broken the view with a map and everything nicely laid out. We will fix it as soon as possible, but it's a very big job for us. Any Google API experts feel free to contact us! For now this will have to do, sorry.

Usage: Enter one or more of the fields, as you wish. Blank field means "all". Be sure to use correct country names, e.g. "United Kingdom" not UK or England. Unfortunately "united states" (united states of america doesn't work) gets United Kingdom as well, just work down to the bottom or last page. Not case-sensitive. Results sorted by newest first.

Ferry from Malacca to Dumai

http://www.partireper.it/eng_2006tappa7.htm

http://www.partireper.it/2006tappa7.htm

It takes 5 hours.

Meals are not included. Only water. Is not a real ferry but a boat. They are more than happy to find out the way to let you in with your bike but you have to set off your cases.

IMPORTANT

Before you enter in Dumai or in any other Indonesian city by ferry or whatever, you really need to make sure indonesian police department knows about you.

Before you get to Indonesia, try to call this police station (076129031) and ask them for which documents they need you to provide in order to ride your motorcycle there.

They will ask you for few faxed documents.

This way, once you arrive at the ferry or sea port, they will sent to the nearest police departments to you a copy of an indonesian driving permit.

With that you will be riding to the headcenter police department where they will check your documents again and print out for you the original permit in indonesian which allows you to ride for 30 days.

Shipment: From Istanbul, Turkey to Delhi, India - September, 2006

Enco
Arkin

Terrible company to do business with.

Most of the agents I spoke to in Instanbul were learning about the shipment as I spoke to them.

Enco used Lufthansa to carry the bike. Enco initially quoted me on an uncrated price (just shrink wrapped) at 600 Euros. Then the price shot up on the day before our flight was to leave to Delhi - up to 1400 euros. This was because Enco discovered that the bike needed to be boxed up in a crate.

I didnt have the time to argue so had them create a crate. This added the cost of course.

Arkin turned out to be friendly but ultimately rubbish and his management skills were just not there, hence many cock ups at the last minute.

Getting the bike out of customs in New Delhi was easier, took about 2 and a half days. Get the paperwork from your carriers (airline) office at the Cargo airport, then head straght for new customs house and walk around until you find an agent there.

I had a large Sikh called Kenwal - AVOID him!

I met another agent there called Raj Thakur - he seemed to be a good guy. He works for Acme Global Logistics - mobile is +91 98180 80701.

In total it cost 85 pounds to get the bike out - thats broken up by about 25 pounds in a bribe (basically payment to Kenwal) and the rest in customs fees - you get a receipt for this.

Its possible, but I found it an annoying journey for the bike as the people in Turkey had little idea what was going on - give yourself a good week to sort it out in Turkey - DO go to istanbul to do this, DO have face to face meetings with people and DO get a printed quote for the shipment.

Casemaker Packing Services

Unit 13 Inter'nal Trading Est

Martin Weldon

This company provided the crating side of the process. The main contact was very helpful and friendly. The complany service essentially provided all I was looking for: appropriate materials for the crate (sterilised wood, etc), 3 copies of the dangerous goods form (as requested) and were very competitive on cost, compared to other companies.

Two major bonus points were that, as I found that crating with someone other than the shipper often meant a cheaper rate, but then you need to pay to get your crated bike to the shipper. not so with casemaker, as they will deliver to the shipper as part of the cost (provided its not too far). In this case this was 5 miles down the road, to the shippers depot!! The second bonus was that they let me dismantle the bike on their premises so that I could save yet more money, on the crate cost and therefore also the shipping.Good service in my opinion, provided I find my bike in one pice in BA next Tuesday!!

My crate = 31" x 43" x 88"
Cubic volume of 2.054
Gross weight 350kgs

Trucked my crate from Edmonton, Alberta to Vancouver (additional $200)

Sailings were weekely, routing from Vancouver to Singapore to JHB. Insurance was unable to procure unless the crate was packed by a professional crating company. My crate was a metal framed Suzuki one with heavy cardboard on all sides including top. Not possible to see the contents from the outside.

Sailing time is 45 days, although 10% over is normal. Keep in mind you have 3 free day storage on the recieving end, then it is (in this case) about $20 per day storage fees (cash only).

No issues with the shipper - well communicated and in fact my shipment was early into JHB.

Arriving in JHB, the receiving agent Jonen Freight has the office by the airport. Go their first, pay the recieving charges= $250. Because the shipment came by ocean, we had to go to the main customs office in the city to get the paperwork done. This is 30 minutes drive from Jonen. Three wrong addresses later, we get to the customs (SARS)office. It is in the basement of the Carlton Market, which is beside the Carlton Hotel, which everybody knows about. You must make an appointment to have a customs agent go check the vehicle number. You also have to pick him up at thier office, drive him to where your crate is, check the number, and drive him back to his office. His time is $10 per hour. He will stamp the carnet. Most container companies are located in the City Deep neigborhood. 10 minutes from downtown. Mondays and Fridays is standstill traffic with trucks in this area. Avoid those days if possible. Also, it would be wise to find out where your crate is BEFORE picking up the customs guys as it is easy to get lost in there.
I chose to do the clearance myself, but if you got your agent to do it, all this running around I would assume would be easier. No idea what this costs. If you do not have a car or friends to help you drive around, it will be easier to allow the agent to clear the bike.
No real issues on either end.

$890 $250 on receiving end
