Wink 4x4 roadmaps for spain

Hi travellers

I'm heading for spain with my 4x4 next month. I plan to do some of the more remote roads/tracks in spain. Are there some maps better then others?

How good are the general road maps you can buy in bookshops for this kind of travelling?

Thanks,

Jakob

There are a whole series of maps 1:30,000 available from the Spanish National Parks people. We picked one up from the local tourism office for the Albera mountains, on the back it shows another 13 that are available. The good thing is that it was FREE. Other than that I'd go for 1:200,000, they give enough detail for most local driving.

The Map shop shows plenty of Spanish maps,

Also, Tienda Verde (the green shop!) go right down to 1:25000 scale maps for all of Spain.

I emailed them a couple of weeks ago (they have an English page too) but so far have got no reply.

Hi Jakob,
I live in Spain and do a bit of bike off-roading. I have found that in some areas, a good alternative to map coverage is to print out satellite photos from Google Earth; the coverage is very good in the provinces of Malaga and Cadiz in Andalucia, and of course you can zoom right in and get accurate details of the trails.

I normally use those maps from www.editorialalpina.com, including the digital ones for Ozi. No coverage of the whole of Spain, just the nice bits!

Additionally for north eastern Spain I recomend the road books this guys knocks out:

http://www.santiflaquer.com/

great routes, but dont rely on the waypoints.

Please drive appropriately in the national and natural parks.

Hi Jim,
I'm in Alhaurin El Grande, 20km due west of Malaga airport. I'll be there 11-19 May then I'm off to Morocco in my old Land Cruiser.

BTW, Tienda Verde is excellent, wish I knew about it before, I've just ordered a bunch of local maps.

Off roading is illegal in most places in Spain between the months of June and September due to the high risk of fire, so I will try to find out information locally before heading out with your 4X4 or you could be fined.....

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
