Well depends where you want to go. You can easily take a 2 wheel drive down the west coast of west africa through Morrocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, the Gambia, - there is a rally each year called Plymouth to Dakar where entrants are only supposed to spend £100 buying a vehicle and £15 preparing it and they get down - they are pretty stuffed once they are down there but they do the job. You can also head inland through Southern Mali, Burkina Fasu, Cote D'ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Niger. The main problem for a trans africa trip is I think you would struggle to cross Central Africa either through Chad - Sudan or down the west coast - DRC, Congo, Angola in a 2wd. However 2CVs and I think Renault 4s do seem to have gone all over the place. If you were planning crossing Central Africa to go trans africa then I would suggest thinking about a 4wd or at least a 2 wheel drive vehicle with excellent ground clearance such as a Van of some sort. You could probably go down the East coast in a 2 wheel drive with relatively few problems. ie Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, etc.
