Panama into Columbia via container ?(feb/mar '10)

We are travelling 4x4, already have some contacts for sharing a 40' High Cube into Columbia towards end of Feb

BUT . . . . . . . . . .

Have been told that there is a 'banana boat' working back n forth to the Coco Solo dock/port at Colon (Panama), aparently they have ramps on one of the ships used ( Elizabeth 111 ) and so possible to 'easily' drive either car or bike onto boat.
Again aparently these ships are 'happy' to shift vehicle AND humans!!!! at very reasonable cost (i know a guy who was quoted $300 for his landrover 110 about 2 weeks ago).

However, this option takes a bit of 'on the ground' sorting !!! ???

My question really is to ask is anybody aware of this route and does anybody have ACTUAL knowledge / contact with somebody that has done it ?

Timing wise if a few of us (bikes and 4x4s) can combine it should enable an easier arangement and safer processing and of course we all save money !

Phil.

I know two seperate people who've moved 4x4s into Panama this year (2010) and so I have cost and details etc, anybody need ?

Travel from Panana to Columbia

Hi Phil..

I don't think I'll be ready to travel in February but I am looking for info about travel with motorcycles and 4x4s from Panama to Columbia.

If you have current info or get more in the future I would be most appreciative if you could forward it on to me!

Thanks!

Mark

Hey everyone,

I'm driving south in my 2000 Jeep TJ, currently in Costa Rica, thinking I'll want to cross the Darien around mid March (very rough guess)
I know I can get a single 20' container for about $1400 and share a 40' for about $850, but I'm getting more and more interested in the banana boat option.

If anyone has any info on boats that can take my car please post here or if you want to share a container around that date, please contact me.
dan(dot)grec(at)gmail(dot)com

Thanks,
-Dan

finally a reply !

Hey Dan

I think you have missed a couple of my direct replies????

I do get real problems with emails that i send getting 'spammed' !!

I know you are down in Columbia now, how is it ?

We are in Pan City, have arranged shipping with SeaBoard, sharing a container with Ernesto.
Should arrive in Columbia on 16th.

What is the diesel price down there at moment ?
Have you (are you?) planning to go into Venezuala?

Phil.
