As previous posters, roof racks are only for light items , say roof tent . Empty jerries , ( Sceptre make work well with petrol and diesel although not all carriers will take them if designed for steel cans) . V8 petrol really you need increased size rear tank and aux under floor along chassis outer side to get range , on a disco ( i had defender V8 with rear aux behind wheel and underseat tank as well as rear main OE ) . Dont go over mgvw limit for legal and component life . Discovery is difficult to make a robust roofrack mounting as you only have the gutters , unless you go external roll cage , which is weighty, the rear ladder is usually a bit narrow . Dont even contemplate carrying petrol inside vehicle. Dont like wheel spacers , and they will only marginally increase stability even if measurable. You can , and i have at times greatly overloaded landrovers , they handled it for the short time it was required , but that doent make it a good idea JMHE

Some great comments, not much to add except...

Always best to research your specific vehicle model, you can learn a lot of useful from owners clubs.

Most of the damage I have seen on Land Cruisers tends to be in the form of cracking around the screen and pillars.

Obviously at all times make sure your springs are rated for all the weight you are carrying also if you have a lot of weight on consider stiffer anti roll bars.

Whilst fitting wheel spacers provides a wider track, looking cool and spreading the load they lead to a lot more load on the wheel bearings so make sure you use quality bearings and install them properly.

Hi all

i Have a land rover 110 300tdi van with a safety devices full length roof rack on it. It has been on my 110 for 8 years without any problems, but now i am looking to fit a maggiolina safari roof tent, and now i am thinking that this could be to much weight for the roof,

what are your thoughts on this

cheers

Dave

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
