Lots of good points said already, just to stick my two pennies worth in....
the first thing is with a new vehicle is the carnet is going to be VERY expensive........
the 90 is a fantastic vehicle, it does have its drawbacks, smaller fuel tank, lack of room to sleep inside (but possibe to do a lifting roof conversion) etc etc
on the plus side as eightpot mentions, its small, nimble, perfect for 1 or 2 persons and with a second tank to eliminate the need to carry fuel cans (a great modification) and some careful packing its a great overlander.
- also the fact its smaller means you dont tend to take lots of crap with you - we found it fine for us over our last 5 month trip.
The swb/lwb thing is a pesonal preference thing - I personally have no problem with a 90 - Its luxury compared to overlanding on a KTM 640.......believe me !!!
Erm - have you considered doing the trip on a bike - it will cost you one third or less of the price of doing it in a 4x4 ???? - and for me Solo overlanding = Motorbike....just a thought....
the new 2.4 wouldnt be my first choice either - as the guys mention its all electronics - the 300 Tdi or 2.8 would be a much better bet for ease of maintenance - my 300 Tdi has done over 150,000 miles, Ive changed the timing belt every 50,000 miles put new injectors in and nothing else major required -Its started first time every time for the last 13 years and has been worked VERY hard......
its not a patch on a yota straight 6 - but the 90 doesnt need a big engine - and I average 28 mpg loaded up overlanding with me and the boss on board
just looking at the fuel injectors on new common rail diesels is enough to put me off overlanding in them - and I wouldnt let a bush mechanic near one.....
So by all means go for a 90 - but consider a looked after used one and have more $$$$$$ to spend on your trip
