I'll be honest in that I don't really keep a track on fuel consumption, just fill it up when needed. But I just filled up and a quick calculation shows over the last few days I was getting 10l/100km, mostly asphalt roads, but some up in the mountains at 2000m and some good dirt tracks.
The D4D will give better fuel economy than the 1KZTE but has slightly more complicated bits to fix if it goes wrong. IMHO either engine Prado would be a better choice than the X-trail.
Looks like I never did finish this trip report , oh well the flickr link takes you to the more recent photos although this years still need up loading.
I also have some trip reports over on the landcruiserclub.net

Thnx for getting back and watching your mpg! I guess yours isn't bad considering the fuel prices in this part of Africa. In Chris Scotts book it was mentioned that the safe distance for a Prado tank is 300 miles Yours would be giving much better rates even if on asphalt!
Btw I remember you mentioning that you prefer the old engine in prado over the d4d - any reasons why especially with the mentioned issues about cooling?
Btw is your LSD working with the old age and mileage?
Ps: am enjoying the flicker album espically the wide angles with car on side
