Any difference between Australian R class or RE (LAMS) class overseas?
Hi everyone,
Planning to do a trip from Canada down to South America most likely on a KLR650 and a RE (LAMS) license combined with an IDP. Just wondering if any countries have different laws on bike size etc or do most places just recognize the Australian bike license as all the same (R, RE etc).. ? Will I come into any trouble riding over there on one of these bikes with a RE?
Thanks!
Josh

So you are a learner? and local laws would apply, get your full licence done.

You may not even be able to get an IDP with a L. Seem to recall reading something about it but don't remember details.
Ah yes, from the NRMA FAQ https://www.mynrma.com.au/holidays/t...riving-permits

I have a learner's licence, can I apply for an IDP?
Unfortunately not. The IDP can only be issued to Provisional or full drivers licence holders, aged 18 years and older.

I plan on having my licence before I arrive but it will obviously be RE (restricted to 660cc) no unrestricted.

As well as learners, P1 and P2 riders are restricted from 'high power' motorcycles.
Suggest you directly contact your IDP issuer to check if you can get an IDP .. NRMA etc.

You must hold a provisional or full licence for the AAA to issue an IDP.

My experience
Hi mate, I had a similar thing which ended up requiring me to postpone the trip by two months to get the required license. In Victoria the learners permit wasn't sufficient for an IDP. So I completed the check ride and then did the test day the morning of my flight. They issued the IDP off the paper temp license I got after I passed and then my parents sent me the license to Europe after I'd been riding a few weeks. So I'm restricted till 2020 (size and no pillion) but the license is valid internationally and I ended up doing 13000km two up and the only officer in South Africa that discovered the restriction on passengers said "well that's a stupid rule".....
