Foreigner buying a new bike in Australia

Hello all,
how is it for a foreigner to buy and register a new bike in Australia? I would take it with me home to Norway after the trip (3-4 months). What is required (permanent adress etc.?)

Thanks!

Hi,

I took my bike to OZ in 2006 and had to register it. According to the official website it is possible to register bikes with a foreign rego.

Some time later I met a girl from Switzerland who was told that she would require an OZ rego for her swiss bike, which she did. Bloody ignorant officials Cost her roundabout 500 AUD.

Thus follows, that it is generally possible to register a bike as a foreigner. But, as you have suspected, you do need an OZ address. You do not need a permanent residence. The licensing dept. was quite happy with the address of a friend of mine in Melbourne.

What you should consider are the custom regulations in your home country, if you intend to import the OZ bike to Norway.

Hans

The process will vary slightly from State to State.

But essentially you just tell the dealer to register and insure the bike and they will if they want the sale.

Depending on the State weblookup - NSW the Road Traffic Authority - RTA.
QLD Queensland Transport, VIC Vicroads. I cant remember the other States. They all have links about buying a new vehicle and the ID requirements.

For export of the bike, you should get in touch with Customs - Customs home page and see if you are eligible to recover the GST and import duty paid at the time of purchase. I think the dealer has to do some paperwork for that to happen.
