Ah yeah, the sprag clutch only connects the crank to the starter motor when the starter turns (or not in your case) The engine is always connected to the gearbox unless the main clutch is disengaged or slipping.

All sorted now!

The flywheel puller required a fair bit of brute force and a good dose of WD40 and eventually came off. The puller bolt actually bent slightly in the process. The old sprag came out easily, and I could see the spring looked a bit tattered but all the blocks were still there with a little wear evident. The new sprag slipped in nicely and everything was back together in the 2 hours I originally predicted to perform the operation. How wonderful it is to have the right tools!

Thankyou all for your advice!

Anyone need a flywheel puller?

Hi all. Anyone have any idea how much a srag clutch is going to cost me for my KTM 640? And I'll bet it has to come from Austria?

Last one I bought cost NZ$144, It was ex Austria, you might be better off trying to source one ex USA if you need it in a hurry. Have you tried a new spring?

Cheers

Hi,

I notice you're in Perth. Have you tried the KTM & Ducati shop at Causeway? I think the KTM headquarters for Oz is based there.

I have a flywheel puller if you need to borrow one... I've now made Perth my home after 50,000km on the road on my 640.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
