Kawasaki klr650
I'm an Aussie living in Canada at the moment and I've bought a klr 650 that I love and want to bring it back to Australia. How do I go about doing this do I pull it apart and ship it piece by piece?

Apparently you mean how to do it physically? I would pull the front wheel off, rotate the handlebars down, cover the seat with some builder's plastic, and build a crate around it. Drain all fluids. STRAP IT ON THE CRATE BETTER THAN YOU THINK YOU NEED. After that, start shopping for air or boat freight companies.

Weblookup VSB10, which will give you all the dirt on how to get an import approval, BUT beware, with duty and GST you will pay about another 25% of what the bike is worth, plus shipping costs, which may equate to being cheaper to buy one here.
You can try to ship it as parts, but the same rules apply, it just costs more.

I looked into this with a KTM SXC I had and liked a lot. However once you take into account shipping, paperwork, customs, GST, inspection, attachment of an approval plate, etc... it became far too expensive.
For a rare sportscar worth $100,000 it would be well worth it. For a motorbike worth $5000 it is not.
I got all my info through Googling and finding various people's reports (there was a particularly good one about a guy importing a Lotus from the UK). Spend an hour or two doing that and you'll have a reasonable idea of the cost and work involved.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
