.tif format is a raster format .. the 278 only takes vector format. So no LINZ maps on the 278.  You may be able to put them on to your camera for viewing that way.. certainly on the PC at home and look at them there.

Motravel .. you can download a map for Germany from here and see what is is like locally ... Free worldwide Garmin maps from OpenStreetMap This may give you some confidence in the maps.
You can also get a New Zealand map for the same source. The other sources use the same data base but 'render' (draw with different colors, line thickness etc) it differently. There is also the variability of the data on the data base ... more people per kilometer in Germany compared to NZ means there may be less workers mapping stuff in NZ - so the map may have less. But the German map will give you an idea of roughly how the NZ map will be.
Jet lag... should not be too bad. I find it worst travelling the other way - from Oz/Nz to Europe.
