New zealand to Australia
Hi,

Greetings from Indonesia.

we just finished explore New zealand for a month and after that we will send the bike from Auckland to Sydney.

we finally using Green Freight cargo to send the bike next week.

i read some threads in here that when arrive in Australia we need to get a third party insurance.

anyone recently just did that maybe can share about this?

I arrived this time last year, and as I had a carnet and my bike was legal in the UK (roadworthy test). I didn't need to get any tests on the bike and was told via email from the roadworthy people that it is not required to have insurance on a temporary imported foreign motorcycle.

I was stopped 42 times in the space of 6 months in sydney, educating the officers of this law haha.

Best to email the authorities and get this in writing and print it out, helped me loads of times. Most of the police were quite ready to arrest or fine me for riding a foreign plated motorcycle, just keep all your docs with you.

I had my norwegian plated bike in Australia for almost 10 months and rode 30 k kms on it - and I was never stopped.

Anyhow - I got third party insurance by having it checked for roadworthiness (at The Road Department - or whatever it is called) when I arrived in Darwin. Problem was that it was only valid i NT and not in the other states. So I repeated the procedure in WA and they gave me 6 months validity - if it was valid in other states than WA Im not sure. After that I didnt bother doing this anymore.

I do find it a bit strange that Oz authorities would tell you that third party insurance isnt mandatory - even for temporary imported bikes....
But luckily I was never in a position I needed to find this out.

.Im from the UK on a UK bike I temporarily imported my bike last Sept 2015 in Melbourne. I went to Vic roads office all they wanted was proof the bike belonged to me (vehicle log book) and I was here for less than one year (showed visa acceptance ).

now getting ready to temp import to New Zealand ? in any body has advice

Vic Roads must have changed the rules as back in 2009 they made us pay for their TAC 3rd party accident insurance. Never got stopped in 5 weeks & 8500km though. If going to Oz again I'd try & enter in NSW (no requirement apart from carnet) then not bother with any of the other state's bollocks.

For temporary import to NZ: customs you can either have a carnet or pay a refundable 15% tax deposit. To get road legal you need a rego (vehicle license) plus a WOF (warrant of fitness safety check) See the customs & NZTA websites for details, last time I looked they had all the info listed fairly clearly.

Come visit when you you get to Rotorua, usually a , bed & garage here for a traveling motorcyclist.

Each State has slightly different laws and NSW does not require third party insurance for a vehicle registered overseas and on a carnet - its called the "nominal defendant" scheme for unregistered vehicles in NSW.


No one has ever given me a straight answer (from non NSW States) about a vehicle arriving in NSW from overseas and then travelling to another State. There are regulations in each State that recognise the other States insurance schemes.


If you arrive in Australia in any other State than NSW then you have to go through whatever that State requires.

Yes I have understood that there are slightly different laws/rules about this in every state in Aus. I hava had a long thread about this earlier on. I arrived in NT and got third party insurance there - and I was told it was only valid in NT. Then I rode from Darwin to Perth. And I repeated the procedure in Perth. Problem was I have already been riding more than 3 weeks in WA and thousands of kms - without valid insurance. Because you cannot get a new policy on each state border.
And another problem is that it is very time consuming and expensive to find the correct offices, get the bike checked etc and pay for all this in each and every state. In Perth I was sent off to 3 different locations to get it sorted just for one state. After that I decided to drop the rest of the states and hopw that the insurance I was sold in WA was valid in other states as well. Luckily I never had to find out that.
