Proof of ownership and rego
Hi all,
I'm planning a trip overseas on my motorbike. Victoria doesn't have titles for vehicles or certificates of rego that I’m aware of. The best I have for my bike is a hand-written receipt with all the bike and owner details for proof of ownership. For proof of rego I have a renewal letter and the receipt of payment, again with the bike and owner details. Is there better documents I can use or will these suffice for border crossings and police?

As far as I can see from online images the Victorian renewal letter is very similar to the NSW equivalent. With a NSW one I've traveled Russia, Europe large parts of Africa and South America - nearly 40 countries in all- and never had an issue at all.

As long as your document shows the make and model, rego number, VIN/Chassis number and engine number so the border officials can fill in all the boxes on the computer screen you should be fine.

FYI I've always presented a colour photocopy of the original (which I have safely stored away) and never had that queried.

That's great to know. I'm emailed registration renewal so I can print it as many times as I need. The only detail it's short on is the vehicle type which Vicroads lazily put as Suzuki solo. Hopefully that will be okay.

Vic Roads reg certificate.
I went into Vic Roads and got a registration certificate from them. It wasn't just the renewal document it detailed all the numbers etc for the bike.

As long as your rego papers show the VIN number and plate number you'll be good. We've crossed about 50 borders with our 16 Africa Twin registered in NSW, never a problem.

I have a recollection that bringing a vehicle back into Australia needs either the stamped "out" carnet from Australian Customs or a valid import approval so you could probably use either of these to prove ownership.
DoTARS has more info, and as usual the VSB10 bulletin has the most recent info.
If you are going for a long time then you will need to ensure that the vehicle stays registered - probably avoid NSW rego which requires annual roadworthy inspections.

The name on the rego would also need to match the name on your passport. And you will need your drivers licenses at a very few borders so those details should match as well.


If you are going to be travelling when your driving license runs out, be aware that in NSW at least you either have to send the drivers license back with your renewal application, of get all sorts of signatures from embassies and such that are just abouyt impossible to get. Luckily I had an extra replacement license I could send back so I still had a genuine license on me at all times
