Temporary car import into NZ
Hey all!
Im looking to ship my car into NZ for 12 months travelling! Me and my girlfriend will be living out the car for the whole time and would like to build the ultimate rig here in the UK this winter, so we can just arrive and go once we land next March!
Looking on the NZ goverment website it looks fairly easy. I will be shipping from the UK to Wellington hopefully.
Has anyone done this? Any advice, pitfalls, things to watch out for?
Thanks
Jamie

Have you confirmed that you can stay there for 12 months straight on a UK passport?

The usual advice is: shipping by sea is slower and more expensive (especially on the receiving end) than you originally think.
With NZ, an extra aspect is the super-aggressive biosecurity. Your car will need to come out of the container absolutely clean, inside and out (and yes they will check the insides of fender cavities and such things).
Between the cost of building a rig and the cost of shipping it back and forth, you may find it cheaper to buy something on the ground in NZ and sell it a year later. Registering a vehicle in your name as a foreigner is easy there.

Hello
I would message Daniel at
About - NEW ZEALAND MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURES
He ships mostly peoples motorcycles return or one way to New Zealand but may also do vehicles.
I,m currently right in the process of shipping my UK registered motorcycle with him to New Zealand.
It will be the second time I have used his services which is excellent.
If you are planning to arrive in March you will be in time their Autumn.

It is usually me shipping my bike overseas but I happened to see you post. I ship my bike because in places with a lot of border crossings like South America is is always best to have the a bike on your home plates in your name. There are no border crossings once you are in NZ. I know its good to have your own vehicle but unless you are shipping on to your next destination I would say the advise to buy something in NZ is the best advice. There are a huge number of campervan options here. Look them up on Trademe.co.nz

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
