Bike swapping - Australia/New Zealand 2014/5

I'm a South African citizen interested in doing an extended motorcycle tour through Australia and New Zealand, with my wife.
We are both members of the Ulysses SA (South Africa) motorcycle club but would like to find out if any type of "bike swapping" arrangements could be negotiated with Australian/New Zealand citizens?
We presently own 2 motorcycles 1) 2009 BMW 1200 GS with all the accessories and 2) 2008 Kawasaki KLR 650 with only 2 soft panniers and a soft "top" box, both bikes fitted with dual purpose tyres.
Our intention is to either first accommodate the "swap" in RSA for the Australian/New Zealand citizen(s) to tour South Africa with us as guides and then exchange for us to use their bike in Australia and New Zealand (with their guidance or not) - or visa versa.
We are both pensioners (60 and 55 years old) and will be trying to do the trip as cheaply as possible.
Any interested people can contact me via this thread after which peronsal information/contact details can be disclosed
Much appreciated.

Royce

Hello Royce
My name is Richard Wolters and live in Brisbane Queensland age 64 and also a(unpaid ) pensioner) I am planning to go to SA in feb or March to do a months riding and am in contact with a few hire companies and also a buy/buy back arrangement. I have owned BMWs for 45 years . the last few years R100GSPD . R1150 GS adv/R12oo GS and presently own 2 F650 GS bikes. One is for my daily use and the other I am preparing for June when I want to ride from Vladivostok to Europe (see travellers seeking buddies thread) The idea of a bike swap is interesting. But how would you calculate wear and tear for example. Please let me know what your idea is with this, is could be a good option for both of us. I am planning for one month is SA and possibly want to ride to the Vic falls and back through Namibia.
If you want to get to know me a bit please go to:
www.blurb.com and go to the bookshop. enter my name and you see some of my book. One is called "bikes of my life" which you can view free in its entire length
Please make some suggestions and we can chew it over
kind regards
Richard Wolters

Bike swapping - Australia/New Zealand 2014/5

Hi Richard
As per your reply - The idea of a bike swap is interesting. But how would you calculate wear and tear for example. Please let me know what your idea is with this, is could be a good option for both of us.
The Swap means I use yours after (or before) you used mine. There will be no money changing hands and therefore my insurance will not be increased as I have allowed you to drive my bike. All you pay for is the petrol as the bike will be serviced before you take it and will have new tyres on good for in excess of say 5000 km which should do for a month long trip. If you need to leave the country to go into Zimbabwe, Botswana or Namibia you will have a copy of my bike papers, insurance and a letter from me stating that you can take it out of the country as it is on loan but all taxes etc to enter and leave the country will be for your pocket.
The same will then apply when I use yours, only I will not take yours out of the country of registration as I will not use it outside Australia. The New Zealand part of my trip will co-inside with the Australian trip so that I do one after the other.
My phone number +27795118264 is a Blackberry - PIN number 25AE4858 - is on WhatsApp as well as on Skype as "royce.harris4" if you wish to
use another means of contact. I can also be reached on email - royce.harris@nashuaisp.co.za
I already have two people from New Zealand interested in the Swap as well but can accommodate up to 3 couples at any given time.
Hope this answers the question.

Bike swap

Royce

We're on the south coast of WA. If you ever plan to come this way, or maybe use Perth as a jump point, give me a shout. Can also set you up with a bike if you need/want.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
