UPDATE needed. Selling foreign moto in SA countries
Hello, I'm going to buy a motorcycle in Colombia and will drive to either Chile, Argentina, or Uruguay. I've read a lot of threads here about it being illegal to sell a motorcycle with foreign plates in Argentina. Or that it's possible but I'll need to sell it to another foreigner/traveler?
Does anyone have recent information? I'm shopping for honda xre300s right now. I'm wondering if I should buy an older bike (like $2000) so when i arrive at my destination I can "donate" it to a local and not really worry about selling it OR if I should buy a middle/nicer moto and I'll have the opportunity to resell it and get a good portion of my original investment back?
Any information on this matter is greatly appreciated. Or if you know of a thread that already answers my questions about Chile/Argentina/Uruguay, please drop a link.
Thank you!! -first time touring and a solo female rider

selling
You cannot sell a Colombian registered moto and get a new plate in South America, you have to be in Colombia to transfer the registration to another owner
The plate stays with the Moto for its entire life
there are taxes and technical inspections with a older than two year
Be careful on the tax thing to see if it is payed to the current year or if there are back taxes, the motor vehical department charges a lot of interest if taxes are not paid previously
Be careful Its Colombia

You can effectively transfer ownership using a PODER (POA) which authorises a user of your bike to drive it and cross national borders. However you will still remain the titled owner. Many travel bikes change hands this way

Hi Meli!
Exciting plans ahead! I just purchased a second-hand bike in Medellín. Paperwork and transfer went smooth with a lot of help from some locals I met here (even without speaking a word of Spanish - thank you google translate)
My understanding is that you are responsible for all fines and violations that are linked to a motorcycle registered in your name. I think using a power of attorney would permit someone to ride your bike and potentially even conduct the transfer of ownership in your absence (once they are back in Colombia). Maybe someone living in Colombia can shed a bit of light on the risk exposure of have someone else riding a motorcycle that’s registered in your name. (Would suck to come back to Colombia in the future just to being greeted by the border police with outstanding fines / unpaid taxes).
PS: When will you start your journey. I’ll sell my refurbished DR350 in the first week of March. Let me know if you are interested. Will make a separate post with more infos.

Selling Chilean bike in Colombia
In Colombia, you can't import a used vehicle for example. So I'm selling a bike here in Colombia that I bought in Chile and it's here on a temporary import permit until July so I can't sell it to someone who wants to keep it in the country (legally) past then. I risk a fine on return to Colombia and they risk losing the bike if stopped by the police.
I am looking for a traveller to buy it, then they could sell it in Chile or import it in another country that has different import restrictions. It's been my first motorbike and first motorbike tour and was perfect for what I needed! If you need any more info I'm on +447783955409 and the ad is below.
