South Africa Rent/Buy

I’m looking to rent or buy a motorcycle to use in South Africa and Namibia this winter, any suggestions?
In India I’ve used a buy back scheme, do they exist in SA ?
Cheers

My suggestion is to contact the bike rental companies for instance "Samatours" or "Karoo Biking" or BMW Motorrad for used bikes. But I presume they rather sell their bikes after the main season, that is in April to June.

You can check the South African bike forum Login
or check the trading sites for used bike like Ananzani, Gumtree or CarTraders etc.

Good luck!

Hi Mpark1010, were you able to buy a bike in South Africa ? I have similar plans for later this year (2024) . Turns out one needs a TRN (Traffic Register Number) to register the bike in your name as a foreigner there.

If you did manage to buy, Any pointers on is how to get the TRN would be hugely appreciated. Assuming you too had no local contacts and stayed in a hotel / airBnB.
Thanks,
makalu

A bit off-topic, however I was under the impression that buying in India is not permitted, even for Indian citizens who are non-resident.

I'd appreciate insight into how you were able to buy in India.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
