1200 GS Helmet Lock
What is available for aftermarket helment locks? The helmet "hook" under the GS seat is not very practical. Seems like a easy thing that escaped the engineers at BMW.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The lock on the 1100GS is rubbish too - it can be popped open way too easily so doesn't deter the thief who fancies your helmet. I carry a braided wire lock which coils up small and is about 1.5 meters long. I can thread it through the sleeve of my jacket and chin guard on my helmet (I use a full face helmet) and so far it's been good. A determined thief with some sturdy bolt croppers wouldn't have much trouble but it stop the opportunist.

Hmm - I have to admit I use the topbox to put it (and gloves) in when parked up.

Good in theory but rubbish in practice.... if you spend hundred of pounds on your helmet and gloves and then put it in a plastic box that is protected by a lock worth about 50p there is every chance it'll not be there when you get back. Top box locks are pathetic generally speaking. I don't know what type you have but most are way too easy to pop open with a screwdriver. It's a problem in cities where theives watch places that bikes park - they spot someone putting their expensive Arai helmet in the top box and watch them walk away. Moments later the scumbag has a new helmet to sell ....it's yours

My mate had two helmets cut off his bike lock system while touring in Italy; it takes a nano-second with a stanley type knife to slice through the chin strap. All the kids there ride their scooters around with the chin strap un-done (just like the Hollywood war movies!) - now you know why.

I have used a heavy-ish bike chain to lock the helmets to the bike front wheel (I watched a couple just yesterday do the same thing but they also wrapped the helmets in a plastic bin liner so that dogs can pee on them without peeing in them).

I also favour using a cycle lock - wire type thing as described in an earlier post; I use this to lock multiple full-face helmets to the handle bars in full view of everyone.

I like the idea of a cheap bike cover; never done that as yet but it is worth a go.

Put a sticker on your tank "Smith and Wesson does my talkin". Better yet, do what I do. Carry your helmet with you. That way you only have to worry about a robber approaching you saying "Smith and Wesson does my talkin". Smitty

I recently bought 2 PacSafe Lidsafe helmet bags and I'm very pleased with them. No more carrying the helmet around if there's no room in the top box and, if necessary, I can keep a spare helmet strapped on the pillion seat without worrying too much about losing it. As mentioned, these might not stop a professional thief who has targeted your bike but they are great for when you just pull up in a new location and have to leave the bike unattended.

The soft material is fine on visors - although I still double up with my soft BMW helmet bag inside the Lidsafe due to the cost of BMW replacement visors!

I got mine off eBay as the price was good.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
