Over the last forty years, I rode both with and without and I agree with the above that ABS on the street is great. Although with some models it can be a hassle to shut off for dirt riding, overall ABS is essential for safety. How many times do superior brakes have to save your life to be worth the extra money?

I understand your dilemma and had the same many times. ABS is one of these feature which are expensive on the bike and do not really seems necessary due to the fact that you rarely use it but now when ever you will need it it will feel priceless and should you have a passenger I think ABS is even more important.It is also a + when selling the bike , I have and had ABS on plenty of my bikes and onlly needed once on my FJR1300 at 130 M/H 2 up on a wet patch, it save my butt and the passenger too trying to avoid a truck.
Skin graph cost more than ABS.

My 1150GS had Servo assisted and ABS when I bought it new. I liked it on the road, but hated it when riding off road, as it snatched when braking at low speeds.
It failed when the bike had 85,000km on the clock, and would have cost $2000 or more to replace. I removed it, and regret ever buying the ABS model in the first place!
It's up to you, but I've ridin both and will stay without ABS in future.

Just to fuel the fire...

I wouldn't want ABS even if the option were thrown in for free. In fact, if it were standard equipment, I'd be looking at another motorcycle.

Plus, I've never needed it...in 33 years of riding.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
