Broken driveshaft Iran HELP !

Hello,

i am currently in Zanjan in North Western Iran. After breaking down i was interrogated for twelve hours as to why i was in Zanjan and why i was with two Iranians.

The reason being of couse was they were trying to help, but try expaining that in Farsi at three am after no food (ramedan) and pushing a 250 kg motorke for a few kms.

Anyway,

I had noticed during the day that a vibration and whirring sound was occuring through footpegs and was worried. Planning to get to a mechanic quick. Travelling at around 120km/hr it was getting dark on a highway. I felt like a snap and no power to back wheel.

Some mechanics have pulled the driveshaft out up until i think it is the output flange. We do not have the BMW tool to go any further.

The housing around the output flange has been torn.

The bike is in many pieces in a shed.

I will try and post picture of the damage i can see.

I am also trying to find replacement parts and wondering about best courier.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Sorry i have a 1988 r100 GS.

Marcus

I had mine (1988 R100GS) rewelded into a solid shaft. We cut the yoke off the large (trans) end and used driveshaft tubing. You'll have to be careful about the welds, using a grinder or a lathe to make them fit inside the swingarm. I'd bet you can find a local metal/welding shop that could do this mod for you, and at least get you back on the road.

gear box

It wasnt the drive shaft it is the gearbox. I had a service in Ankara by BMW a week ago and they failed to check gearbox oil! As a result the gearbox is a complete right off. Little bits is ball bearings and shredded cogs.

Where would be a good place to start looking. Thanks for the replies i will try and find BMW in Tehran

If you have the money - buy a second hand gear box complete and simply replace it all!
Pulling the old one apart to find that the gears have been pitted, the dogs are scored and the bearings are all shot is just a waste of time. Motobins and Motoworks (uk) would have them .. but shipping costs will be high... local would be better.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
