Help with acerbis based plastics, 990SMT tank on a F800GS
Hi,
I have bought a 19 ltr tank from a 2011 KTM 990 smt that i hope to fit over the front of my f800gs to increase the fuel range for a RTW trip as I dont want to pay 1000 quid for the Touratech tank. I have already lost all of the lighting cradle as i have an MST rally tower and fairing fitted. I am also moving the battery tray and loosing the airbox. My backup plan will be to build a custon tank out of foam as a buck and then coat it in epoxy reinforced fibreglass but im trying out easier options first. What I would like to ask is if anyone has managed to deform any plastic tank with heat? By heating the tank all over and using a jack in the middle I have managed to expand it enough to slide most of the way over frame but There are a few sections that are still in the way and then need some proper deformation to get the tank over.
I have emailed Acerbis asking if the tank is made of cross linked polyethylene or nylon as I had read that they made their off road tanks out of polyethylene that cant be welded and their road tanks out out of nylon that can, as there may be an option to cut out the areas and have an experienced plastic welded try and patch up the sections.
I would be grateful for any help
Kind Regards
Dave
