side stand issue.

im about to buy a 89 r80rt and have been hearing that you cannot put the side stand down on this bike without dismounting first.
im not the tallest rider and would not be happy getting off without the side stand deployed first.
Is this the case or have i been misinformed.

Concerned.

By the way i have never before owned a bmw and am really keen to get this one.!

Buy it! Great bike (although some might disagree). There are several sidestand options - just do a search on this site as well as lots on this machine. The original stand is hopeless.

Yes they are great bikes. I'm 5ft8in and can easily put the sidestand down whilst still seated on my R100/7. I also have an R100GS-Paris Dakar which is a whole different kettle of fish. I could never fully extend the crashbar-mounted side stand so bought a Surefoot sidestand which does the job.

Talking Siding with the Others

I agree with the Paul and Tim (love it when we have first name terms on the HUBB)

I'm 5'6" and ride an R80GS, I got mine second hand and it came with a non-standard side stand. I didn't realise how lucky I was until I rode someone else's R80 and a KLR both with those loooooong side stands. A bit of a nightmare (especially for the tall bloke on the back of the KLR!), I was wobbling a lot getting on and off.
So I'd agree, get the bike and get an alternative side stand.

Good luck.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
