Think that is the wrong way around -
Fliter then boil.
Filter - to git rid of the dirt and larger bugs.
Boil to kill the smaller bugs. Boiling with dirt means the buggs can 'hide' in the dirt ... thus not as effective.
At least that is what I've read. And the same applies to the Uv light thingys - the water should be 'clean' (ie to see throught) first.
------------------------- To get rid of iodine (or other chemical) taste - activated charcoal filters are best.Personally I normallly travel with a stove - so boiling replaces the need to carry chemicals.

I guess that would be right for unclear/muddy water.
None of the water Ive filtered over the last 8years has been murky in anyway. In fact its been mainly tap water from my hotel that Ive boiled and filtered.
Clear to start with.
Worth remembering though.

Hi have just got myself a steri pen, which is a UV light that kills everything, bactieria, virises, 99.99999%. The only consideration is that it does not work with cloudy water. I used Chlorine tabelsts and neutrlizers (took out all the taste, leaves the water slightly 'soft' feel to it) on my last trip, 9months trans africa. So when the water is not clean enought for the fliter I will use the tablets, (two tiny pots, 2x2cm). Like the last post, 99% of the time in africa the water I delt with was clear and would have been fine for the UV pen. I can only think of 3 times when I had to use water that was dirty, and in these situations would have just used the Chlorine. I am going around the world for a couple years starting in June, given the small size of the steripen (I have the journeyman) I think it is an ideal tool for motorbikers, It has a life time of 2ltrs a day for 7 years. It takes 90secs for 1ltr with no effort.
George
Have a look!

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
