Extending Tourist VISA and Vehicle Import - Mexico
Hey I'm traveling here in Mexico with Jeremiah - http://www.mytripjournal.com/jeremiahsjourney

He is teetering on the expiration of his tourist visa and temporary vehicle importation permit and we are wondering what the process is for getting an extension past the 180 days granted upon entry into mexico?

Hi Alan:
It was a pleasure meeting you and Jeremiah in Creel last week.

I would go to the nearest city airport that has international flights. They will have an Immigration office there, or at least they should be able to tell you where to go. And they should speak good english there too.

Then you can request an extension of the visa's term at the nearest Immigration office. It is recommended that you request this extension at least 15 days prior to its expiration. You can resquest an additonal 6 months on your FMT this way.

To extend your visa you should have with you:
-Your passport and a photocopy
-The original FMT
-A letter requesting the extension of term.

I checked into a few sites and from what I can see you can't stay longer than 180 days as a tourist. I would advise you to either go back to the States and get another Tourist card and permit or go south and leave the country that way. You can only get an extension to the visa if it was issued for less than 180 days in which case you can get up to 180 days but no more. Be very careful with this otherwise you could get fined or even lose the bike.

I am not sure, but if you call that ph. number they should be able to tell you.

BTW, I just wrote to Banjercito via their website:

I emailed in spanish to their answer-line with these questions. Let's see what they reply.

I have a feeling this vehcile permit can be extended without you having to leave and reenter the country.

"Delivery Notification: Delivery has failed, due to over quota...."
WTF?

On to other avenues:

Here are more phone numbers worth calling from inside Mexico: (toll free). They can steer you in the right direction:

1) SECRETARÍA DE LA FUNCIÓN PÚBLICA (SFP):

SACTEL MEX: 01 800 1120 584

2) Aduana (Customs) México: 01 800 2238 262

FYI:
The Personal Tourist Visas (FMT) are handled by the "Instituto Nacional de Migración" (http://www.inami.gob.mx)
and the Vehicle Importation matters are handfled by Banjercito: (http://www.banjercito.com.mx/site/iitv.jsp)

I checked today with Gobernacion and a tourist can only stay up to 180 days. The number I called was (55)5387-2449 or (55)5387-2450. I was told that you have to leave the country and can then return for another 180 days. This is what I had to do when I first came to Mexico in 1976 and it looks like things haven't changed in almost 30 years.

thanks guys. the info is great. miah is at tourist office guanajuato as i type. i´ll forwadr him the info. looks like he´´ll have to leave the country. but road coditions south might make this challenging...
