Getting a new TVIP in Mexico
I've decided to stay in Mexico for longer than the 6 months of my original TVIP.
Right now, I'm planning to cross the border in Guatemala (El Ceibo), cancel the old one, and then come back and get a new one. I still have a week or so left on my current TVIP.
Has anyone done this? Any issues? Can I have lunch in Guatemala and come back across or how long should I wait?

You will have no trouble getting a new TVIP and a new FMM at El Ceibo provided you do so BEFORE the current papers expire . The FMM and TVIP time limits are linked .
DO NOT DO THIS ON A MONDAY because for the years that El Ceibo has been operating as a road crossing point it has been the practice that the person in charge of doing the TVIP has that day off -work each week . .
It is probable that you won't even need to go across the border.
Simply go into the MEXICAN customs building and cancel your TVIP and collect your refund for the Security Deposit , then cancel your FMM.
You can then turn right around and go back to set up a new FMM and TVIP for another 180 day period . You will pay anew for both documents and again post the required security deposit .
Only if the Mexican official considers it incorrect to renew so quickly might you consider entering Guatemala to wait the time that the Mexican workers might suggest. But I really dont think they will do that for anyperson adhering to the rules of the 180 day permits .

Thanks, I ended up getting going to lago de Flores and Tikal for a couple days so it wasn’t an issue. The border at El Ceibo is remote and small, but the workers on both sides were professional and very helpful. Mexican Banjercito guy was especially cool.
On the way back into Mexico the immigration guy gave me a bit of a grilling about a new FMM but gave me a new one for six months. Me and bike are now good to go.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
