Psion 5 connectivity

For some unknown reason I took along my Psion 5 series for the Panamerican.

Trouble is, it's practically of no use / seeing as I don't carry the driver required for it to talk with a PC

Anyone got a driver less solution for connecting a 5 to an INternet PC ?

Cheers

Jeremy

I don't know of a driver-less solution as the format has to change and it can''t be done native on the psion. if you have the browser, a travel modem, an ISP and a hotel (?) phone line, you can do a fair bit. I don't know if you can maintain a website, but you should be able to send email etc. I guess its that or carry the disk or download PsiWin from Psion's site, but this will be expensive on a slow connection. I guess that's why the WinCE guys are so smug and Psion announced The End last week. bummer cos I like the device.

I don't know if this answer is too late or not appropriate. I have a Psion MX5 which i bought for travel email - but found that it wouldn't talk to my Macs - despite the 'Mac connectivity' kit (an oxymoron) A few weeks ago I bought a card reader for the Mac and noticed it had a compact flash socket - guess what - the compact flash cards from the Psion are directly readable by the Mac. Presumably also by a PC! Software downloads transfer directly too, so it's possible to upgrade the machine very easily using this method.

So I bought a Nokia 8210 phone and now have infrared email - plus with a program called Phoneman on the Psion - full keyboard SMS & Fax, plus a ring tone editor, phone book editor and much more. A 64mbyte CF card is more than enough for a stack of programs and data, and enough space to back up the Psion.

See www.mikemcc.net for dial up comms solving and tips on CF card compatability (Sandisk and Kodak are OK)

Also I guess it depends what you want to transfer - I use the Psion for travel notes, email and contacts via the Compact Card route and so far it's working out fine. all can be transferred to the Mac (and the phone) easily.

Syncing the Psion Agenda (diary) to PC may be more difficult using this method tho'.

We were driving around East Europe this summer, and used my Psion Series 5 for maintaining our trip journal. I made a simple script for converting Psion Word documents into web pages. The results can be seen at http://reissut.nemein.net/

We also had the idea to use the Psion's CompactFlash slot for uploading images from my Digital Ixus to the net, but as we were using GSM connectivity this proved to be too expensive -- each image took about 13 minutes of upload time. However, we at least were able to prove that the concept worked by uploading some four images.

Other way to handle this was to connect the Psion to a computer in an Internet Cafe, but unfortunately most of them didn't allow this.

Next year I think we will bring along a travel modem for the Psion and sign up to a globally roaming ISP to make the image uploads more sensible. I would be very interested to hear about experiences with such a setup in developing countries.

Next year we're also planning to use the Psion for uploading GPS track logs for automatically generating route maps, but this will require more thought and effort.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
