I think it’s a good idea. IMO making your own website may be harder than going half RTW, so it may be great help if you want more than blogspot and others. So wish you the best luck. I think it all may be a matter of how much, in terms of a basic/cheaper package to a more customised one with many options.

To make it commercially viable, you need to market to the higher budget travellers - they are the ones who will be prepared to actually SPEND MONEY on getting a website set up. To that end you will need to look beyond this website, which, deliberately or not, has ended up with quite a low budget focus. Low budget travellers trying to buy bikes for 1500 quid to go round the world, are not going to pay your bills. Also explore other sites and avenues that cater to a broader spectrum of bike travellers.

Walter, I partially agree with you, although only partially, so I will try put it in other (softer) terms: quite often people in HUBB tend to invest more on the trip than on the bike and furthermore, tend to stretch the money to keep the trip longer. So it may be truth in some cases (1500GBP ebay bike), but probably the total expenditure may be higher than the approach in other forums where people like to have a Dakar Rally bike just to ride in Montana or Colorado and that will be the longest adventure trip they undertake. Not better or worse, just a different approach to the ones' (to be found more easily here in HUBB) that will go RTW on a Yamaha YBR 125. [I have never gone RTW on a bike, so do not criticize any, but admire them all and just show my opinion]. But that’s a longer debate.
Well, Maximondo, it’s for sure these ones on the 125cc might not be the target, but others in HUBB may easily be, I think.
So, yes, as a business, I'd look for the cash and apart from other options, I would personally contact “Adventure Tour Companies” such as Globebusters and Globeriders and the like to offer them your service. Some of their clients may be interested and will definitely have the cash. It sounds less romantic, but more economically viable, as Walter very reasonably pointed. Add anything smelling to “brand new BMW”; that could also help if we profile possible clients (rather than Hero Honda riders).
My two cents.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
