Website Services For Overlanders

We are planning to set up a paid service that helps overlanders prepare for their trip by helping with the first step, by creating their own website and blog. We will offer a one click foolproof website set up, with all the features overlanders need (social media, maps, etc.), including a unique domain name. All on fast and reliable hosting and brought to you by a team of people who are actually overlanders.

For those who are about to set out on an epic adventure or those who have already done so, would you be (or would you have been) interested in this kind of paid service?

I'm guessing nobody wants this kind of service??

Are you all tech savvy, you can produce a clean website that will hopefully entice sponsors and is very easy to maintain???

Im just doing market research and is hoping for some sort of answer - even if its just a no or if you have any questions about it!

Thanks in advance for any input!!

I like it

I think its a good idea.

Even for the tech savvy, its a lot of work pulling all the bits together, and most if not many want at least a blog online for family and friends to follow them.

I know Jon Fox, the guy who normally does my websites, was thinking about offering a service like that, maybe more manual and customised. Not sure if he ever got around to it.

To make it commercially viable, you need to market to the higher budget travellers - they are the ones who will be prepared to actually SPEND MONEY on getting a website set up. To that end you will need to look beyond this website, which, deliberately or not, has ended up with quite a low budget focus. Low budget travellers trying to buy bikes for 1500 quid to go round the world, are not going to pay your bills. Also explore other sites and avenues that cater to a broader spectrum of bike travellers.

I think it’s a good idea. IMO making your own website may be harder than going half RTW, so it may be great help if you want more than blogspot and others. So wish you the best luck. I think it all may be a matter of how much, in terms of a basic/cheaper package to a more customised one with many options.

Walter, I partially agree with you, although only partially, so I will try put it in other (softer) terms: quite often people in HUBB tend to invest more on the trip than on the bike and furthermore, tend to stretch the money to keep the trip longer. So it may be truth in some cases (1500GBP ebay bike), but probably the total expenditure may be higher than the approach in other forums where people like to have a Dakar Rally bike just to ride in Montana or Colorado and that will be the longest adventure trip they undertake. Not better or worse, just a different approach to the ones' (to be found more easily here in HUBB) that will go RTW on a Yamaha YBR 125. [I have never gone RTW on a bike, so do not criticize any, but admire them all and just show my opinion]. But that’s a longer debate.

Well, Maximondo, it’s for sure these ones on the 125cc might not be the target, but others in HUBB may easily be, I think.

So, yes, as a business, I'd look for the cash and apart from other options, I would personally contact “Adventure Tour Companies” such as Globebusters and Globeriders and the like to offer them your service. Some of their clients may be interested and will definitely have the cash. It sounds less romantic, but more economically viable, as Walter very reasonably pointed. Add anything smelling to “brand new BMW”; that could also help if we profile possible clients (rather than Hero Honda riders).

My two cents.

Esteban

I fear it may be just too easy to do it for free...

I am a computer numpty but I managed to put together a website using yola. It may not be up to some people's standards but I was amazed with what could be achieved by using a template.

Look at me, i guess i are one of the travellers with a higher budget - because i travel by 4x4.

I have setup a blogspot account - and have done some customisations.

I should make an blogheader and so on - but think - the content count.

So i would definitively dont pay for just a blog / website.

When you search for sponsors (marketing of website, stickers on the car) - and make a bundle - so that the marketing income is you for 30% - at sample - that could be a business.. Then so i dont have to pay you for a website..

You can offer a free website / blog / configuration - and earn the money of marketing. And this way you can also use free services who are available, like blogger...

i agree with a lot of what the other people have said.

i could also see a market where you could offer a very low cost do it your self template style set up initially. then when people are travelling they could just send this straight to you and you handle the website for a higher cost. you handle maps photos blogs etc. a give people the ability to pay it off when they get back in installments. but could be difficult making sure people pay maybe.
just an idea

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
