Water Filtering at Home and on the Road
Hi All,
For those you that don’t know I’ve manage to attract some really great people to help sponsor my trip, one of the very best is companies are called Pure Hydration they have help me cover all of my water purifying needs on my extended trip with their great kit.
If you have already completed your own trip research you have come to realise that at some point you will be need the ability to clean your own drinking water, the what if scenarios are too many to go over but needless to say there are many many times on the road that you will need good fresh clean drinking water.
And if you have researched really well you will have noticed that it’s much cheaper to purify your own water at about 1 10th the price of named bottled water.
Remembering that not all countries have the strict regulations that we do in the UK for our own tap water, if you’re planning on going over to the Eastern Bloc countries they actually don’t have many standards for the filtration of hard metals from their own water, and that’s really pure poison from a tap. With the Africa countries it’s pretty much the same as our western bellies just aren’t used to drinking poor quality water load with numerous viruses bacteria and other bits of debris that will make you long for death, so it’s always best to purify everything you drink.
There are a few ways to filter water, boiling, tablets, iodine are the first to come to mind so I will go over them one by one.
1. Boiling, Takes an absolute age to do and no one really wants to drink hot water on a hot day
2. Tablets, these take time to work and leave that horrible bleached taste in the water, not very nice
3. Iodine, faster than tablets but the taste is worse than drinking your own urine
Thank god for a very bright guy named Jon Grant, he had the vision to design and produce a different kind of multilayered filter, not only does it clean out nearly all of the bugs germs and metals from the water it also does it without leaving a bad taste and compared to the other filtering methods it does it a hell of a lot faster.
If you haven’t already covered your own water filtration needs for your trip, or still don’t have a way of filtering your own water at home in case of emergencies like the continuous floods we seem to be having lately, then you could do a lot worse than to contact Pure Hydration and look at what they can do for you.
They are also one of the few companies to get MOD certified for their products, they will also supply the same products that are available to you to our courageous troops both at home and abroad.

Hi Lee,
Looks like good kit! though it's only inline drinking filtration, and leaves a small gap....what about cooking etc? will you boil the water for this or do have another filter? If you're concerned about metals in the water etc, boiling will not help asit will not remove the impurities. But very good kit for it's purpose though!

Hi Steve,
It's not just inline filtration they have other filters for bladder bags so that you can have many litres of water handy at anytime, very handy for those that drive 4x4s. I have a 5ltr Bladder that I use mainly for washing both myself and my kitchen kit, plus the hand held (Traveller 1ltr) and Back pack (Aquasac 3ltrs).
The 5ltr is used for when I camp because it’s pretty flat I normally load it on the top of my panniers for when I pitch, when I unpack I just hang it from my handlebars then it’s just like a bladder with a turn tap, and then to re-fill it I just go the nearest water source and two minutes later I have decent water to use again.

Well Lee, looks like you didn't have a choice But to drink yours after Jon drank His! ( see, I have read up on this...... also looked at the Interwebnet) and apart from the fact fact you can do this ......" the waiter gave me the most filthy look when I poured the water from the jug sitting on the table into my Traveller before I shook it up and drank from it." Meaning its Portable & Quick its is Guaranteed to keep the Tummy free from Nasties.
The Human Body is composed of a great percentage of water ( something like 85%) Don't flame me if I'm wrong, and Water Bourne bacteria. Giardia, Amoebas, Thrive in such an environment, also Diseases like Cholera, Typhoid can all be avoided with CLEAN Drinking water.
I caught a Miserable Tummy bug & Dysentry while in Tunisia due to so called "Bottled" water being just water from a pump. ( if its NOT SEALED DONT DRINK) but this bit of kit would have saved my Ass Literally!
Consider the HID lighting set on standby!, Im Buying one of these http://www.bwtechnologies.com/iqs/si...ion_packs.html for this reason alone - Kills viruses and bacteria such as E-Coli, Polio, Hepatitis A, and others
- Removes waterborne pathogens, including Giardia, Crytosporidium, etc.
- Removes toxic chemicals and heavy metals

Not only does it look the 'business' for overlanders but an ideal piece of kit for 'package' tourists that are rightly paranoid about the quality of water they drink, I for one will be seriously looking into getting one.

You can get tablets that don't leave a taste and preserve the water for a long time as well (Micropur). Just in case you don't need a regular system, but more of an emergy treatment for exceptional circumstances.
There are many other filter systems on the market as well, many of them for a long time. One of the best known is Katadyn.

Hi Pieter,
Yep the Micropur tablets will get you out of any given emergency situation but only as long as the water is of a reasonable quality, ie fast flowing stream as it's not a filter in itself. (you can read the web site)
Katadyn I thought were the Dogs B*llocks of filters until I actually had to use one for a week, did you know that by forcing the water out under pressure you don't kill nearly as many of the nasties in the water as they state.
Also Katadyn doesn't filter out any of the Heavy Metals that you will find in the former soviet bloc countries.
The reason I chose to approach Pure Hydration, was because I did through research into the Survival Conditions of each country along my route, and they have the only product that matches it's functionality with my journeys route.
They are not only supplying the MOD they will also soon be supplying all of the emergency rescue crews as well, as well as the first responder untis.

Yes, they do seem very good, with a very broad range of filtration, heavy metals, viruses and taste improvement in one filter is impressive.
It does come at a cost though, 11p per liter for the handheld bottle.
For longer term applications it would still pay to investigate if you need all those capabilities. You do on your journey, so it might be your only choice. For a lot of uses like aid workers or missionaries who spend a long time at one location a more limited but much higher capacity filter (i.e. thousands of liters instead of hundreds) might be more suited.
