What tank range?
We are planning a trip from London to Cape Town late 2002. We are going across Europe, through the Middle East and then Eqypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzinia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa. Will bikes with a range of around 250km be sufficient or will we need to install larger tanks? If so, what is the minimum range we would require?
Thanks in advance
Bruce

250km should easily be sufficient except in parts of Sudan and Ethiopia, although it might even be enough there. BUT big tanks give a nice margin of error that can come in very handy.
An alternative is to make sure you can easily carry jerricans of some sort for extra fuel when needed. there's a thread here somewhere on carrying extra fuel and methods. Use the search function to find it.
Good luck,

As Grant said the big tanks gives you peace of mind so I would go for it. I did actually . Beside the long stretches between cities or villages, sometimes in rural areas you might not find gas with high enough octane. That’s the case for example in Egypt between Bahareya and Daklha. The only oasis on that road is Farafra and the last time they had anything better that 80 octane is in the early 90s. Not to mention that from the looks of the station the underground gas tanks can’t be that clean.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
