I'm about to buy a car to drive from Amsterdam to Accra. Anyone got some tips for choosing petrol or diesel-cars? How is the availibilty and what are the prices?

I'm thinking of a Landrover discovery 2.5 TDI somewhere begin '90's. Good idea? Especially for selling, cause I will be selling the car in Accra. Are Mithsibisu Pejero's any good use?

I don't suppose you'll find people in those parts chasing you to buy a LR Discovery. I'd rather think in more practical terms - Toyota Landcruiser 60, 78 or 80, even Landrover SIII but not a Disco!

Try a 2wd Peugeot van/estate car or a Merc 190.. or the TLC as Roman mentions..they wont touch a Disco - especially an old one, with a barge pole.

Toyota's rule off course, and getting rid of a pajero will be fairly easy.

But, older disco's can be very cheap, and they aren't bad eather. In Accra you might even be able to sell it (well, if its LHD that is, I'm not sure that you can register a RHD overthere, and wont make a lot of money). Accra has at least two land rover places, meaning that it is not totally impossible to find spares. 300Tdi is easier then 200Tdi though. Series are long gone. I don't think you'd find buyers for those in Ghana (in Western Sahara and Cameroon maybe), and unless you have a really well preserved example, they aren't really up to it anymore.

And get a diesel!

Surprising, I always thought the discoveries would be very populair for selling in Accra and the surrounding region.

Well, it seems I'll be buying a pajero or a patrol soon then.

Pajero's are populair you reckon, or just okay?

Longbodies look interesting, especialy for sleeping, any suggestions on that?

Don't get a diesel series landrover!!!!!! not unless you like pain and have a great deal of time. 0-60 takes as long as it takes to find a steep enough hill. people have grown old and died behind the wheel of a 21/4 diesel. It was also proof if any were needed that you should not design a diesel engine from a car engine. A series motor is still a fabulous and cheap sahara motor though, vey tough and basic, just make sure you get a good one. witham specialist vehicles had a s111 with just 1000km on the clock in LHD drive recently. As close to a new s11 as you can get!
