Engine additives, cleaners, enhancers...
Later this year I'm taking off in my Hilux. It's been well looked afer, but the engine has done 154k miles. Nothings knocking, there's no smoke and it feels fine, but anything which could reduce wear, prolong engine life and increase fuel economy would be welcome.
Looking in car accessory shops there are literally dozens of products which claim to increase lubrication, reduce wear, clean the injectors, clean the oil system, even repair worn areas and increase compression and power.
My question is, are any of these actualy any good? Does anyone feel thay have gained in performance, engine longevity or fuel economy from any of them??
Any info would be appreciated,
Dan

Forget about repair, lower fuel consumption and "better lubrication" - e.g. the teflon products become acid at higher temperatures...
Cleaning may work: Use an oil with higher specs and drain it after 500 or 1000 mls, you can wash out some dirt. Fuel system is best cleaned with "super" fuel by one of the major companies (depending on your vehicle and country, there are super diesel, RON 100 with don't-know-what a good choice).
Regards,
Peter

I have used red line diesel engine cleaner in the 90 once after it was stored for 18 months - didnt really notice much diffence in performance but it did drop the emissions a bit for the mot ! - remember its the shape of a brick - with a roof rack !
It is better IMHO to make sure the timing is spot on, valves are adjusted correctly and new injectors will make the biggest difference in performance - also using decent oil and regular filter/fluid changes.
Though if it is running fine, not down on power and the servicing schedule is up to date I'd just leave it alone !
Cheers
